What Is A Narcissist? Is There A Cure?

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

What Makes Someone A Narcissist?
A narcissist will appear as if they have a very large ego and feel really good about themselves. However, the outward appearance does not speak to the very deep insecurity that lies beneath the surface.

A narcissist doesn't like it when others do better than them. They delight in other's misfortune. A narcissistic parent will be jealous of their children and often will be in competition with at least one of them.

There are nine traits that make someone a narcissist. A person needs to have five of the nine to be considered a narcissist.

From Psychology Today These Nine Traits Are:

1. Has a grandiose sense of self-importance and exaggerates achievements and talents
2. Dreams of unlimited power, success, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
3. Lacks empathy for the feelings and needs of others
4. Requires excessive admiration
5. Believes he or she is special and unique and can be understood only by, or should associate only with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
6. Unreasonably expects special, favorable treatment or compliance with his or her wishes
7. Exploits and takes advantage of others to achieve personal ends
8. Envies others or believes they’re envious of him or her
9. Has “an attitude” of arrogance or acts that way

Sinus Infections: How To Train Your Inner Dragon

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Irritable, agitated, bitchy? What the heck happened to change me from the happy peaceful woman to feel so darned bitchy and irritable?

Two words, my mother! Those closest to us have the greatest impact on us for the duration of our lives. Our mothers can trigger us very quickly because they know exactly where to poke, prod or press.

What causes a sinus infection?

Someone close to us that has made us angry, and we avoid speaking the truth to them for whatever reason is the root cause of a sinus infection.

If you have been following me for some time, you have heard about my mother, the narcissist. My mother is a stickler for politeness and thank you notes. She has alienated all her grandchildren who no longer speak to her. She cuts people off from gifts if they don't send her a thank you note.

Mrs. Manners (my mother) was rude to me. I called her after weeks of silence when she last called me, "STUPID," and she was rude. She didn't want to talk to me because she was watching "her show" (soap opera).

I love deeply. To find my mother so resistant and rude to me when manners are what she preaches to everyone else, made me feel hugely disrespected. Manners don't work just one way. If someone expects you to be polite and mannerly to them, they ought to be polite to others, right?

A loving relationship is much more important to me than any darn television show. However, my mother obviously didn't feel the same. She didn't want to interrupt her show.

How To Recognize A Narcissist

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Paris Hilton

Narcissists shine brightly and magnetize us with their stories. They appear intelligent, able and confident on the surface. One thing that is for sure is we are attracted to their brilliance.

Below is a list of the nine criteria in diagnostic testing used to determine narcissism. Someone doesn't have to meet all nine criteria to be considered narcissists.

What Creates A Narcissist?

Somewhere in their past they were hurt deeply and compensate for the fracture in their psyche with their persona.

Miley Cyrus
We see famous celebrities with huge egos are all of them narcissistic? Hitler, Donald Trump, Stalin, Pablo Picasso, Winston Churchill, Tony Blair, Mylie Cyrus, Paris Hilton, Madonna, Kylie Jenner, LadyGagaa, Kanye West are a few.

Narcissists appear larger than life. They display a pattern of grandiosity. They are experts at everything. Some narcissists are also sociopaths or psychopaths as well (a total lack of conscience). The most recent person I met that is a classic narcissist said she had performed the following for a living and was only in her thirties:

  • professional ballerina
  • professional model
  • hair and makeup artist
  • helicopter pilot
  • government official
  • expert mechanic
  • professional artist
  • clothing designer
  • expert seamstress
  • single-handedly wrote and won a million dollar grant upgrade for our town.
  • a dog trainer
  • a building inspector
  • a real estate agent
Signs of Narcissism:

  1. Has a grandiose sense of self-importance. No one is better at anything than them.
  2. Is preoccupied with fantasies (stories) of unlimited success, brilliance, power, or ideal love.
  3. Believes that they are "special, " unique and needs to only associate with the highest level people, institutions or classes.
  4. Needs constant admiration, fishing for compliments, ego-stroking and purrs when flattered.
  5. Has a sense of entitlement.
  6. Lacks empathy; it's always about their feelings but is unconcerned about hurting others.
  7. Arrogant, rude, haughty, abusive attitudes and behaviors.
  8. Believes others are envious of them; envious of others achievements. May feel victimized by others.
  9. Exploits others. Takes advantage of others to achieve own ends.
The nine criteria above are part of the diagnostic requirements, though I have seen other evidence.
  1. They have very low self-esteem. Though they are experts and the best at everything, underneath they feel very small and extremely insecure.
  2. Drama seems to find them, or surround them.
  3. They are only lying when their lips are moving.
  4. They are highly reactive to criticism. They may constantly demean and criticize others but heaven forbid you should say one critical thing to a narcissist you might not hear from them for days or even weeks.
  5. They are better than everyone at everything.
What Creates A Narcissist?

There are many causes of narcissism. A domineering mother who is emotionally unavailable, probably damaged herself that overcompensates with perfection. Having a narcissistic father or mother can create a perpetuation of the originating theme.

I have encountered many narcissists in my lifetime. My mother is one as a Borderline Personality, I was married to a narcissist and just recently encountered a woman who endeared me to her quickly yet attempted to swindle and cheat me. At the core of this woman is a sweetness with an irascibility of a con artist. We want to believe their stories because they are so convincing. One of my son's girlfriends was a narcissist. I grew very fond of her though she hurt me deeply.

A relationship with a narcissist is challenging if not impossible. You cannot trust a narcissist because lies are their raison de´tre. They can't exist without telling stories, as it is part of their makeup. They will feel victimized by the world and us yet feel quite comfortable slashing our feelings without looking back.

In Love With A Narcissist?

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Gorgeous, charismatic, sexy, alluring, seductive. All of these describe how we feel about a narcissist. We usually don't even consider that the person we are falling in love with is narcissistic. We don't see the hidden characteristics at the beginning of the relationship. All we see are the crazy sex scenes, excitement and the feel of an adrenaline rush. The excitement is certainly present by the truck load. That is what is so difficult about a relationship with a narcissist.

When they leave, we feel a longing. We desire them. We adore them. We are magnetized by them. A narcissist is like a magnet when you are a codependent.

Like a moth to a flame, we can't help but be drawn in. The feel of walking on eggshells is so familiar to us. We lived with it all of our childhood, after all. It feels so darned familiar. We don't even see the darkness until we are caught up in their trap. Then it's too late.

Throwing Fits And Things

As quickly as we have fallen in love, the relationship takes a spin and a turn. We wonder what the heck we did to deserve the rage, the broken printer, thrown mirror, glass on the floor, chaos that becomes a hot and cold daily routine. The Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde can be caused by drugs, alcohol or other addictive behaviors. What we can be sure of is that the addictions will be as numerous as the highs.

Leaving Isn't An Option

The drama keeps us penned in. We are addicted to it. The excitement has an allure. We have no idea which end is up and even less of an idea who we are. We lose ourselves. We give more than we have ever given and feel exhausted, drained and exhilarated all at the same time.

Our Self Esteem Suffers

The change happens gradually, we don't even see it coming. After a particularly horrible fight, we recognize that we aren't who we used to be. We have become someone else. We are small, helpless and surrounded by guilt. We feel guilty about leaving. We feel guilty about staying. We feel ungrounded and off center. Nothing else seems to matter but the relationship. We are addicted.

Infidelity

It is common for the narcissist to have affairs. These could be flirtatious texts, sexting or full blown affairs. The affairs bolster lagging self esteem, when they feel they are not getting enough or the type or attention they crave.

Repeating Cycles

Immediately following a fight, we are greeted by breakfast or coffee in bed, a smiling gorgeous person and we are hooked all over again. How can we break the cycle and get ourselves out?

Emotional Maturity

Both parties need to mature. Conversations that are unproductive need to be stopped by one party. Escalation of emotions during "discussions" makes serious conversations almost impossible.

Inflated Ego?

A narcissist appears to be bigger than life. They boast, brag and talk about themselves and all that they have accomplished. However, their self esteem is in the toilet.

Boundaries are crossed repeatedly. Wrongs are never righted. Being in love with a narcissist leaves you feeling off-balance and lower than low.

With age comes more emotional maturity, hopefully, but not always. Anger surfaces when a serious discussion is brought up. You will find the tables turn so quickly that it will make your head spin. You will wonder what on earth happened?

This type of relationship is addictive and typically abusive. Emotion, physical and passive aggressive behavior can all be a part of the tumultuous relationship with a narcissist.

Overcoming Addiction

As the narcissist becomes aware of their addictions, healing may occur. It is a slow process that cannot be pushed. Anger management is usually part of the healing. Deep seated anger with the mother from childhood is often the source of the issues. The pain and suffering from incarcerations, restraining orders and break-ups needs to be great enough for the narcissist to want to change. Until that time, you my dear will be in a lot of pain.

My advice to you is to get help for yourself. As you begin to feel stronger you may decide you have had enough and move on. You cannot change someone else. Letting go can be difficult, but release you from the bondage and suffering.
