Karma's New Adventure

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Karma and Jennifer on Hendrey's Beach, Santa Barbara 2012
In 2001, everything in my world was falling apart. The huge house my husband built was being foreclosed on, his building business was stagnant with the recession and it was evident our marriage
was crumbling as well.

On a Sunday morning in March we climbed into my husband's pickup truck destined for the Unity church. Our daughter Ariel protested uncharacteristically, she enjoyed church and especially the donuts
afterward. It was unusual for her to ask not to go. Her grandmother wasn't feeling well and was staying home. I had let our two dogs Lucy and Jake out with Gunner our old Golden Retriever. There was plenty of room to run on two acres and a lake behind our house, they were usually not far from home.

Due to our rush to get out the door and to church on time we couldn't wait for the dogs to return before leaving. Again, Ariel asked to stay home. We didn't. We went to church as planned.

When we got back into the truck after church, Rich checked his phone. His mother had called several times. He began to play back the message on speaker and cut it off almost immediately. He looked at me gravely and said,"The dogs have been hit." "Which dogs?" Gunner was such a sweetie, I prayed it wasn't Gunner. Lucy had been rescued as a three-month-old puppy from Lake Blue Ridge when she swam across the lake to get to me. I had to pull her out at a dock where she became entangled with the ropes. Lucy was part of my soul. Jake was a beautiful Weimaraner that was stubborn, selfish and hard-headed.

Jake had been hit in the head and died instantly. Lucy was a mess but hanging on. We rushed home in horror. I'll never forget this day. You know that things are falling apart so that they can come back together. We rushed Lucy to the emergency vet twenty minutes away. I held Lucy in the back of my Explorer and talked to her all the way. She talked back to me looking me in the eyes, letting me know how much she loved me. I did my best to be strong for her telling her how wonderful she was and how much I loved her. Lucy felt like she was a part of me. We were connected at the hip, she never left my side. Now she was in terrible pain and there wasn't anything I could do for her except keep her from rolling in the careening SUV and talk to her to keep her calm. Two minutes from the vet we lost her.

Months later, I lay on an acupuncturists table weeping over the loss of Lucy and Jake, I recognized I was more concerned about the loss of Lucy than I was the ending of my marriage.

Etowah Mountain North Carolina
While lying on the table in the quiet healing office with the scent of essential oils and moxa wafting through the air, I had a vision of a black dog. I knew this was to be a significant companion, I had no idea how much of an impact this dog would make in my life. As soon as I was able I called my vet. I knew the dog was a Border Collie and she trained them for agility. My vet spent twenty minutes trying to dissuade me from the breed. She told me if I didn't give a Border Collie a job, they would make one. They were very active and intelligent dogs. I told her I knew I was to have one. She ended the conversation by saying they never ever got Border Collie's turned in as rescues.

Nederland, CO

Two-and-a-half hours later the vet's office called to tell me someone had a Border Collie they had rescued two miles from my house and we could make arrangements to see her that very night. Well, the sex was right. I wanted a dog like Lucy was kind, loyal and sweet. I really wanted a puppy that I could train and bond with from the beginning. When we drove up the long driveway of the horse farm in rural Georgia I prayed that this would be the dog. She was older than I expected. I was told she was a puppy.
Betasso Preserve, CO

I watched her run and play with the other dogs. The people who rescued her already had three dogs. They considered keeping the Border Collie but she had a tendency to run off which caused their dogs to join her. "What is her name," I asked? "We named her Karma because of the way she was found when he was hiking that day. Someone abandoned her., chained her to a tree at the top of Etowah Mountain.

"Their loss is my gain!" As soon as I heard her name was Karma I knew she was my dog. "We'll take her. What do we owe you?" "Nothing. We're just glad she'll be loved."

That my friends were one of the most momentous events in the last eighteen years for me. She was my loyal friend and traveling companion. We visited beaches from one end of Florida, up and down the coast of California. We did countless hikes in Colorado, climbed mountains in and swam in the reservoir in Boulder.

We drove over 200,000 miles together from Atlanta to Henderson North Carolina, Tennessee, St. Augustine Florida, back and forth from Georgia to Boulder, to California countless times. Swimming in rivers, streams, lakes whenever we got the chance. Our life was an adventure.

Karma taught me that nature makes us happy. That no matter how bad we feel when we are inside the house we will feel a hundred times better once we get into the great outdoors. She taught me the importance of a good digestive system and daily elimination. Karma always felt better after taking a good dump! She was lighter and pranced around after an elimination. She loved her walks and did her best to stay fit and healthy until the end. She loved living on the horse ranch in Newhall and was probably the happiest she had ever been.

Karma was the Queen. She was in charge of the cats and the dogs. She was the Queen Bee. The cats and Yoda all respected her. She taught Yoda how to do sign language.

She was the most intelligent dog I have ever had the pleasure to experience.

She signed when she was hungry and a different sign for thirst. She talked to me in a language I came to understand. She often gave me messages through images, mind to mind. I understood what she meant when it came to the end. She wanted no surgery, pills or needles. In 2016, she began to drag her hind right leg. When my vet saw her, I thought he would recommend euthanasia. Instead, he told me about SAM-e!

It cleansed the liver, helped her hips tremendously and added two additional years to her life.

I stopped giving her rabies shots because my vet said they lasted seven years. I have a feeling that the rabies shots cause cancer, especially in Golden Retrievers. I wish we didn't have to give them at all.

Karma, Ruby, Deco and Jennifer Boulder Mt. Sanitas

For over two years I lifted her 55-pound body up and into the back seat and out of the car. She went with me to the grocery store, to the mall, whenever it wasn't too hot to ride. She loved road trips and knew when we were headed to the beach without me even telling her. She knew countless words: beach, ride, go, food, water, out, outside, cat, horse, Shannon, Chloe, Percy, McGillicuddy, Osiris, back, eat, cold, car....

When I had my landscaping company in Georgia, she often went to work with me. I was the boss. I could do whatever I wanted and she was well-behaved. She loved to ride in the truck or car when I bought my Honda.

Eighteen years later, Karma was in her 21st year. I asked her to give me a strong sign so that I would not have to live with the regret of euthanizing her too soon.

On January 1st, Karma was attacked by a 90-pound off-leash pit bull. Had it not been for Meredith Loos and her partner Nick she would have been killed. The strange thing was that only two weeks earlier she was attacked by my neighbor's dog and had to have her ear stitched back on. I saw these events as a foreshadowing and a recognition that she had a scent that other dogs could smell, I thought possibly stomach cancer.

Karma had grown very fond of eating cat food and would mosey over when my back was turned to scarf up the canned food from their bowls. I had to be watchful to ensure the cats got their fair share. Karma and Yoda got a little tasty morsel of canned cat food added to their food just to keep everyone happy.

The past two years of Karma's life, I upgraded her food to be a much better quality and added canned dog food to the dry. I wasn't penny-pinching anymore and my animals benefitted from my abundance. In May of 2017, we moved from the Mojave Desert to a canyon in Newhall California. We were 53 miles closer to the beach and Los Angeles. We all loved our new home. Instead of the desert sand, we had a lawn and roses. We had horses and goats as neighbors instead of junkies and dispensaries. Karma was very happy to have horses again. In Georgia, we enjoyed having horses it was like old times for her.

Karma has finished her work here. I am so grateful for the eighteen years we had together. She welcomed me whenever I got home, sat with me when I cried and loved me unconditionally. After all the abusive relationships I experienced she gave me hope and allowed me to love deeply again.

She was in her 21st year of life when she let me know it was time to say good-bye. There was no doubt in my mind she was ready. I slept outside with her in the 45-degree temperatures in my sleeping bag until the vet's office opened at 9:00 Saturday morning on St. Patrick's Day. I asked a pot-smoking friend to blow smoke into her face to relax her a little. Two puffs and she was almost out. She was breathing heavily, I knew she was in pain but she was in no rush to say goodbye.

I had wondered how on earth Karma would be able to make the 1,200 mile trip from Newhall to Boulder in and out of the car and then up the steps at my son David's home.
Karma knew she couldn't make the trip as much as she wanted to.

I lifted her into the back seat of my Honda for one last ride. She didn't lift her head as we turned onto the canyon road. I talked softly to her the entire way when I wasn't crying. The clinic was quiet and peaceful on that morning. Only two people were ahead of us when I carried Karma in. She weighed 51 pounds one ounce. Eating four times a day she was losing weight. My sense over a year ago was stomach cancer.

I opted out of the examination. I knew it was time. I paid the extra fee for the sedative. The vet talked to me about how fast his father died at age fifty of a heart attack, it was still fresh for him. I cried as Karma drifted off and I kissed her on her head. The vet tech told me that Karma was older than he was. She went peacefully and very quickly. I knew she was more than ready. With Karma safely back in my car I drove her home one last time to say goodbye to Shannon, Yoda, and the cats. Yoda was worried I would take him where I took Karma.

I drove Karma to a crematorium in Sun Valley where animals are cremated separately. This particular crematorium had been in the same family since 1947. I liked that. Craig brought a cart to my car with a soft doggie blanket and laid Karma on top. I cried my entire way home from the crematorium while talking to Karma's spirit. I thanked her for all the wonderful and amazing adventures we had and all the gifts she had given me. I knew that over time, even more, would come to light. While telling her how grateful I was, I exhaled. In the next moment, a whoosh of energy and light went out through the roof of the car like a rocket ship and I knew she was gone.

Animals are more than pets for those who love them like family. Karma traveled with me, and watched my every move. If I went outside, so did she. If I changed my clothes from my nightgown into jeans she noticed. If I packed a suitcase she wanted to go. Karma helped me heal my broken heart from the trauma I have experienced. She was instrumental in allowing me to open my heart completely. A new chapter for both Karma and I has begun. After her spirit left I was shown who she was without her animal body. In her next life, her spirit will be in human form. I am in awe that I was instrumental in allowing her incarnation into the next life.

Feeling Contrarian This Valentine's Day? You Are Not Alone

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

I don't know about you, but I don't like being told what to do. I don't like being told what day I should love my mother, my kids, their grandparents or my lover. I prefer to show love every day of the year. If you must celebrate Valentine's Day because of the pressure of society to do so, then here are my off the wall suggestions.

Valentine's Day is the day that men and women are under pressure to perform, feel love and buy products to show just how much. It is the day when men and women pay exorbitant prices to eat in an overcrowded restaurant squeezed tightly next to strangers where they are party to other's conversations. Romance and intimacy are not found in a crowded over-priced restaurant.

May I suggest some interesting alternatives:

1. Turn the heat up in the kitchen.
If one of you normally cooks, change it up and cook for your partner. Or enjoy cooking together. A healthy meal prepared at home can be a sexy way to begin your evening together. Get creative. Make a simple but sexy meal that you can enjoy without breaking the bank. Valentine's Day is about sharing love, not seeing how much money you can spend. If you have children put them to bed early or ask Grandma and Grandpa to watch them for the evening. Privacy creates a better environment for sex play and letting go.

2. Play games. I don't recommend game-playing in relationships unless it involves a board or a box of questions. Honesty is the best policy, with some humor thrown in. Playing games together can get you laughing and laughter stirs up serotonin and will open your heart for love! Suggestions are dirty Scrabble (make up your own rules), Strip Monopoly, The Kama Sutra Game, Cards Against Humanity. You get the idea, just make a regular game into something sexy. The winner gets to receive first!~

3. Order take out and watch a romantic movie together. Chick flicks and sexy movies can heat up passion that is waning. Couples who have been together might need a little pick-me-up to rev up their engines a little higher.

4. Write a love letter of appreciation to your partner. Give your handmade letter to your Beloved after dinner. Appreciation goes a long way to creating a deeper intimacy and feeling of being loved.

5. Make a homemade card. Home made art and handcrafted cards are a sweet way of putting your personal stamp on your gift rather than someone else's words and artwork. Creativity is something that we all have when we are connected deeply inside ourselves.

6. Design a luscious sexy desert with fresh cut fruit. There is nothing more sensuous than juicy fresh strawberries and bite-sized pieces of navel orange or mandarine. Feed your partner slowly. Allow the taste to awaken each other's senses. Desert can be served in the bedroom with candlelight.

7. Take a moonlit walk together. Holding hands and walking outside under the moon can offer a change of pace and a chance to catch up on your day. Doing something different and unique will make your Valentine's Day memorable.

8. Do something for your partner that you know they would love. If they have mentioned a special essential oil they would love, fill a bath tub with hot water and add a few drops of their favorite essential oil. Or fill the tub with rose petals and leave her to soak and luxuriate alone.

9. Get creative! Chocolates, stuffed bears, and flowers are all nice but overdone. Use your imagination and be true to yourself.

NEWS ALERT!

If you are just beginning to date Valentine's gifts are off limits. Don't put pressure on a brand new thing just because the calendar says, It's VALENTINES DAY! In fact, if you don't get a call from someone on Valentine's Day, it isn't a big deal. A brand new relationship shouldn't be subjected to societal pressure, just because. Go off the rails and take yourself out instead. Your self-esteem isn't dependent on another person calling or not on Valentine's Day. You are special as you are, without anyone attached to you.

Why We Need To Say I Love You Now More Than Ever

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

No matter where we live, whether within the United States, Canada, The Netherlands, France, the UK, Belgium, South Africa, India or Canada, the uncertainty of the safety of our world is in question.

Whether you loved Trump or hated him, most of us are impacted by the news or concerns for our future. The following is Divine Guidance to help you navigate the coming days, weeks and months.

We are here at this time for a reason. We signed up to be present during the world's most tumultuous and changing times. The government of The United States is crumbling, and that can be a scary thing. The systems that aren't working for us any longer cannot stand with the rising vibration of our earth and universe.

In a time when people are rising and Ascending, lies, double standards, racism, hatred, misogyny, abuse, corruption, fascism, are all being witnessed by those in the highest places of power. The shadow parts of humanity are rising to the surface like cream in a bucket of milk. All of us are being pressed, prodded and squeezed to heal our inner darkness, love more deeply, and to rise above the melee.´

Does It Really Need To Be Said?

Now more than ever we need to give love to ourselves and others. Rather than beating ourselves up for misjudging or not rising to the occasion; congratulate yourself. Rather than being upset with yourself for missing a deadline, recognize that you didn't have all the information and new opportunities are presenting themselves to you now.

Praise yourself for completing a task. Praise and congratulate yourself for sitting still and tapping into your higher wisdom by being silent.

Find the joy of being alive during our world's most amazing time.

We can't stop the change that's coming any more than we can stop the ocean's tides. The view might be ugly at times. Instead of focusing on what Trump is doing that is "wrong," find the humor in the irony. Instead of being righteous or angry at Trump's lashing out on Twitter find the humor in the fact that our president is even tweeting!

Give love to you. Tell yourself how wonderful you are. Say, "I love you" to yourself often. Tell your loved ones you love them.

Daily Practices To Calm The Mind

1. Meditate daily. Sit upright turning your eyeballs up toward the ceiling for a few minutes to quiet the mind. Close your eyes with your eyeballs turned upward. Relax your shoulders. Don't worry about the thoughts. Focusing on the errant thoughts only makes them stronger. Allow them to pass through your mind. Use a mantra to focus your mind.

Bring your focus to your heart. Most people begin to meditate from their minds which can be problematic due to the mind chatter. We want to get into our heart center. There are several ways to get into your heart. You can begin noticing your feet and the energy in your feet. Slowly focus on your ankles and their energy of aliveness. Move up to your calves, noticing the energy there. Move upward into your thighs, then abdomen and fall backward into your heart chakras in the center of your chest. Meditating from your heart will connect you to your High Self and your Divine. Gradually, you will find it progressively easier to get into your heart with greater speed. Speed isn't the focus, however. Be patient with yourself. It will get so much easier the more you practice.

I coached a delightful spiritual woman from India who said she couldn't meditate. Within three months her mind was completely quiet of all mind chatter!

2. Use mantras daily. Mantras are a positive statement, similar to an affirmation that changes brain waves from incongruent to congruent. Brain waves become smooth, elongated, relaxing not only our mind but also creating a positive vibration within our body.

Mantras can be used out loud or in the quiet background of your mind. Using a mantra will shift worrisome thoughts because you are giving your mind something to do. Mantras slip beyond our conscious mind into our unconscious mind where they de-stress and calm.

I am worthy
I am deserving
I am loveable
I am loved
I love me

3. Combine meditation and a mantra with nature by walking outside. Nature soothes our soul. Walking outside and just saying "Thank you, thank you, thank you" with each step could be your Sunday walk in nature. Use a simple mantra while walking, "I love me." Give love to you in this beautiful way as often as possible.

I love you,
Now go and love you!

Love Takes A Leap of Faith And Bravery

By  Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Humans were meant to be partnered. We live longer when we have someone who cares about us and generally we are much happier than those who live alone. It is certainly more fun to have sex with a partner than by ourselves and shopping, eating and doing the mundane are much more enjoyable when we have someone to share our lives with.

Find out about my six-week course to shift core beliefs and patterns about love.

Yet, so many people live alone. Why?

We don't want to leap.

We block ourselves with our thinking. Do any of these statements sound like you?

  • There's no one out there who would love me
  • I'm too old
  • I'm not attractive enough
  • I'm not intelligent enough
  • I don't want to be hurt again
  • I want someone, but it's too painful to even think about
  • It's too much trouble to date
  • I don't even know what to do or where to start
  • What if I get hurt again
  • I don't want to go through another heartache or breakup
  • I'm too set in my ways
We focus on what we don't want rather than what we do want. We keep attracting exactly what we don't want. I will help you get past those blocks and get out of your own way to feel sacred, loved, appreciated and adored. Yes, it is possible.

Our beliefs stand in our way of having love. If we don't believe love is possible, we won't find it. If we feel we are unworthy of love, or unloveable, we won't have the bravery we need to go for it. We get in our own way.

It isn't that all the good guys have been taken, or that there are no women left worth having.

  • Clear those debilitating beliefs that prevent you from having love
  • Understand how your thoughts have created the life you have
  • Recognize the red flags and stop explaining them away
  • Notice when actions don't match words
  • Don't settle - you don't have to
  • Find out why we stay with people we shouldn't and get the tools to prevent repeating this damaging behavior
  • You deserve love
  • You are loveable

Tainted To True Love begins in May. Go beyond where you have before and take the LEAP to have the love you have been waiting for.

This course is highly beneficial to couples and singles. It will shift your negative thinking about love, your partner or potential partner.

Much Love to you!

I Absolutely Love and Adore My Family!

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

My wish for you this day is the love and peace you so deserve. Christmas is about joy, I wish you so much joy!

I love my family. This year all of my children and their partners will get together for a week of Christmas celebrating, rock climbing, hiking, game playing, and painting. We celebrate like nobody's business. Our Christmas is unorthodox, just like we are.

We don't drink alcohol. We don't go to church. We are however extremely spiritual. We treat each other the way we wanted to be treated and speak our truth. We have all come a long way on this journey of life. I am so pleased with how evolved my entire family has become.

Near SouthPark, CO
We are conscious. We are self-aware and loving. We don't always agree with what the other might say, but at the same time, we are in a place where we can be okay with what others are doing and creating with their lives. We don't have to agree all the time to be overjoyed to spend time with one another.

David with Ray and Jennifer
My family is one of my biggest joys. I am happiest when I am with my adult children. In fact, I usually make at least four trips to Colorado where we spend time together every year.

I left my home on Tuesday and have been making my way with my dogs, heavy gear, boots, warm sweaters and presents to give. Giving to my family is a great joy to me. This year we decided to keep the spending low, but the joy quotient high. The emphasis isn't on the gift, but the love we feel for one another instead.

Adam taking center stage running the art studio
We do activities together. We walk our dogs together. We hike, paint, take road trips and play Cards Against Humanity. Why? We all love adventure. Couple all these activities with a joy of simply being together and you have some wide open hearts!

We laugh and enjoy each other's company while communing with nature, being creative and just being together. Adam loved to paint and began following his dream to do so when we first moved to Boulder in 2011. He encouraged us all to pick up paint brushes two years ago. Painting at Christmas has become a tradition for our family. I have three of the paintings hanging in my home today.

Bill Gates, Adam Gates, Ariel, me and Josh
So today, I finish up my 1,100-mile trip and land in Boulder, Colorado. We are all so excited to see one another. We don't dread our time together, it is just the opposite. I don't tell my kids how to live their lives, and they accept my weird ways. What they don't know is that I am going to treat them all with a hypnosis session this Christmas.

Ask yourself; I am happiest when ___________________.

I am happiest when I am with my family having fun, cooking, painting, walking, playing enjoying what I have created with God.

hiking with my ex-husband Bill Gates, Adam, and David
I have a great relationship with my boy's father and had a great relationship with Rich until he transitioned. I don't fight with anyone anymore. Life is too short, have a ball!

Adam's heart painting is the backdrop for my videos on YouTube.

What To Remember This Thanksgiving

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Thanksgiving in Georgia with son Adam circa 2009

For so many families of divorce, holidays mean a time of separation by distance, rather than love. Gratitude is part of my daily practice, but Thanksgiving is the day I wake up writing a post about all that I am grateful for before I even open my eyes. Of all the holidays that we celebrate in the United States, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday for so many reasons.

I love Thanksgiving as it is a time for our family to come together and share stories, love and be
Adam, David, and Bill Gates with me in Colorado hiking
together without the pressure of gift-giving. This year it is just my daughter, Ariel, who recently graduated from culinary school and I. my sons are with their father in Connecticut. We still share warm phone calls and humor over the phone lines.

My daughter flew in yesterday from Colorado for the first time in eighteen months. We see each other at least five times a year, but usually in Colorado. Today we will cook together and laugh about the different ways we do things. Rather than me telling her how to cook, the way my mother did, I allow her to express her creativity. When I allow Ariel to be herself, I get the best of her, rather than a suppressed version of herself. She may be my birth daughter, but she couldn't be more different than me if she were adopted. I have to remember her way of communicating love is different than mine. My daughter feels happiest when she is shining her light out in the world, making a difference.

No matter how ingrained some things are for me about methodology and recipes, I allow Ariel to cook the way she wants to rather than following my lead. The more we allow our family to be themselves, rather than the people we wish them to be, the more joy that we experience being together.

Thanksgiving is a time to remember the people who have left us and can't be seen at our tables, remembering our past lives together, and their contributions big and small.

Ariel, David and Jennifer in Colorado
Thanksgiving reminds us of what we have and what is important, as we look around our tables at those we love and how important they are to us. Whether you dine with friends or eat alone here are some things to mull over today more than any day of the year.

From the time I wake up Thanksgiving day, it is a day of reverence, gratitude for all I have and all I receive. Following is my list of things I am grateful. You can use mine to build your own if you wish. Enjoy your day together today. Remember to take a walk outdoors after eating to enjoy each other away from the football games and noise. Revel in the beauty of nature breathing in love and exhaling gratitude.

Gratitude fills our heart with love and allows us to recognize all
that we have. The more grateful for what we have now, the more we open to receive. Gratitude is an expression of love. Even if you don't feel loved or loving, gratitude will help you open our hearts and begin the process of being more loving.

Here's my list:

  1. I am so grateful to be alive today.
  2. I am grateful for my vibrant health.
  3. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned and continue to learn in the process of life.
  4. I am grateful for my trust in myself and The Universe.
  5. I am grateful for my children, Adam, David and Ariel and how our relationships have shifted over the years to be more open, expressive and vulnerable.
  6. I am grateful that Ariel overcame so much (including the death of her father) and graduated from one of the best culinary schools in the US.
  7. I am grateful for my friends.
  8. I am grateful for my clients their expansion, growth, acceptance and how their relationships have become more loving and allowing.
  9. I am grateful for the rain we've had in the desert this week.
  10. I am grateful for my home, my pets and my life.
  11. I am so grateful that I have work that I love to do that fulfills me and helps so many others.
  12. I am grateful to be able to give back.
  13. I am grateful for nature, it's beauty and every changing landscape.

  14. I am grateful for the abundance of food, fruit, and vegetables that grow so close to my home.
  15. I am grateful that nothing stays the same.
  16. I am grateful to have moved beyond depression, anxiety, and illness.
  17. I am grateful for the food on my table and money in the bank.
