How To Communicate In Loving Ways

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Humans are sensitive emotional beings. As we evolve our emotional reactivity begins to diminish. When we are upset our resolve to be level headed flies out the window along with our intelligence. How can we communicate through the challenges that relationships bring our way without thrashing each other in the process?

Arguments are not an indication of relationship failure. It is the way we argue that creates the resultant demise.

Through my life, I have had plenty of experience in relationships. What I have found is that what our parent's modeled for us as love usually wasn't loving. Certainly, in my case, there has been much un-learning and unraveling of what works and what doesn't in relationships.

My parents didn't speak to each other for weeks when they were upset. As children, we were caught in the middle of missiles, landmines, and volatile rage. Their style of communication was destructive, damaging and negative. We need to learn a new style that lifts each other up, rather than destroys self-esteem. If we can't communicate when we are angry and upset without giving each other the silent treatment while we process, we might continue to operate in our parent's footsteps of volatility, defensiveness and contempt.

Unlearning old behaviors takes time, patience and practice. We didn't create these deep patterns overnight. As children, we were
little sponges who soaked up everything our parents did, said and felt. We mimicked them because that is what we are programmed to do. Children learn by watching other's behavior and replicating it.

If our parents were negative and accusatory with one another, we mimic their style. Beginning a conversation with harsh accusatory criticism can cause the other to react in a tailspin of emotions, Once contempt enters a relationship we are doomed to failure. Divorce is a certainty.

Arguments happen in the best of relationships. Conflict will arise. We can't avoid these issues. Not being able to talk rationally to our partners about issues with emotional intelligence leads to divorce and break-ups with a certainty.

John Gottman, a relationship expert in Seattle has researched and written more than twenty books and researched couples while arguing in his Love Lab. His work is remarkable and enlightening. His best work is The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work.  Gottman began researching couples in 1972. He has researched thousands of couples in seven different studies while arguing to see what works and what doesn't.

He is able to predict whether a marriage will succeed or fail from the way that couples argue, and their repair statements at the end of an argument. Gottman's focus is on success rather than the failure of a relationship.

Gottman's research is clear. When we argue in certain ways, our relationship is doomed to failure.

Success Is Possible
Relationships that have deep friendships have the greatest success. When couples know each other and continue to be updated and interested, remembering what is said and important to one another gives a relationship the strong foundation needed to weather the storms that arise naturally.

What We Need To Do Differently For Relationship Success

  • deepen our friendship by supporting each other's goals and dreams
  • learn and remember our partners' likes, dislikes
  • continue to have an interest in dreams, wishes and desires
  • avoid accusatory statements
  • avoid sarcasm and criticism
  • avoid beginning arguments with a harsh startup - criticism
  • when criticism is pervasive it leads to contempt
  • avoid contempt (sneering, cynicism, sarcasm, eyerolling, mockery, and hostile humor)
  • avoid defensiveness - it doesn't help your argument
  • don't tune out your partner - "Stonewalling" often a trait of older marriages
  • avoid flooding your partner with a vitriol of criticism - often accompanied by hostility (physically distressing, blood pressure mounts, heart rate increases, body goes into overdrive)
"Recurrent episodes of flooding leads to divorce for two reasons," says Gottman. "First, they signal that at least one partner feels severe emotional distress when dealing with the other. Second, the physical sensations of feeling flooded - the increased heart rate, sweating, and so on ~ make it virtually impossible to have a productive, problem-solving discussion. When you body goes into overdrive during and argument, it is responding to a very primitive alarm system we inherited from our prehistoric ancestors. All those distressful reactions, like a pounding heart and sweating, occur because on a fundamental level your body perceives your current situation as dangerous."

Repair Attempts

Repair attempts can be as simple as "Stop yelling at me." or "Stick with the topic." These repair attempts can diffuse a situation. A grin, a goofy face can all be repair attempts. A repair attempt stops an argument from steamrolling out of control.

It is the quality of the friendship between a couple that determines the ability to repair an argument and a positive spin on our past.

Positive Spin On The Past

How we spin our old story determines how successfully we navigate our present. If we continually bring up the negative about the past, everything in our current situation has a negative quality to it. If we have created positive feelings about the past history, recognizing was the catalyst for your growth and evolution, and got you to the place you are in now, you have a positive sentiment override.

Every relationship can be repaired. A commitment to renew, recover and repair are what is needed. It isn't conflict resolution that is needed. We need to learn constructive ways of arguing, know each other well and be friends as well as lovers.
Divorce is stressful for everyone. Regret over divorce occurs more often than people admit. If I knew now what I didn't know then, I would have stayed with husband number one. We jump from relationship to relationship because we don't know how to navigate it alone. Having a guide to help you is required, rather than traditional therapy that ends more marriages than it saves. (Just 35% get clinically significant improvements).

I am currently wrapping up a powerful six-week program for women who have continued to attract emotionally unavailable men, or people who won't or can't commit. Last night we began discussing communication and how we can improve our delivery. I am offering two programs beginning in January, one for men and a second for just women. Both sexes have their individual issues with communication. From Tainted To True Love shifts our perspective and patterns so that we easily attract a loving, committed relationship. This workshop is a life-changing and powerful event.

A clarity building exercise to help you discover what you want and don't want precedes a powerful manifestation event.

Are You Sex Starved In Your Relationship?

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Excerpt from Orgasm For Life get your copy and keep your sex hot and the arguments fair.

Married With Children

Commitment, honesty, and trust are what is required for deep intimacy. Sex is what lubricates a healthy relationship, keeping it young, alive, firing on all cylinders. Sex is a reward for many men, but often it is all too rare and fleeting. Most women in their 30’s, with children, have sex once a week or less with their husbands.

For men at this age, not having sex three times a week or more can feel like placing a four-course meal in front of a starving person and telling them they can’t eat it. Laying next to your beautiful wife night after night, not being able to touch her is torture.

Women can throw themselves into raising children while having their tactile needs met during the day. When their husband comes home, sex is usually a very low priority. Sleep may be the only thing on a young mother’s mind after a day of breastfeeding chasing and raising children. Yet, to keep the marriage alive it needs to be a priority.

Regular date-nights each week give a young couple the opportunity to get out without the children. Having grandparents watch the children at their home, can give new parents an opportunity to have sex without interruptions. A locking bedroom door is imperative for parents with small children. Keeping children out of the marital bed, also helps to keep passion alive. Making love with an infant in your bed is not healthy for any of you.

Private time for a couple is important for keeping a relationship balanced, healthy, connected and growth oriented. At the same time spontaneity is necessary to keep the passion alive. When all your sexual encounters are planned, pressure to perform can cause issues and stress. Sex is supposed to be a fun, pleasurable experience, rather than feel like work. Having to become passionate on a clock or calendar certainly eliminates spontaneity.

Believe me, being a single mother is not glamourous. It can be one of the most challenging times in your life. Keeping your marriage alive and healthy is best for everyone. Children need two parents to be confident, effective, balanced adults. Making sex a priority means that you are making your husband a priority. He is needed as a parent and partner. Don’t ignore him. For you men, just because your wife is a little more round than usual, make sure she knows you still are attracted to her. Women give a lot up to have babies. Men need to be understanding of their wive’s needs as well.

After giving birth, pregnancy can be the very last thing a woman wants. The fear of pregnancy can keep her from wanting to have sex. Use protection, to help dispel these natural fears. Be respectful of one another’s feelings. Remember how much you loved each other before the pregnancy. That love is still present, under the diapers, laundry and new obligations.

Surprising as it may seem, men and women often want the same basic things. Go to any Internet dating site to read the profiles. Men want a partner to share their experiences with, the same as women do. Each one of us wants to love and be loved. We all want to be accepted for who we are. Most of us want to have our physical needs taken care of. We want our sexual exchanges to be exciting, fulfilling and beautiful. We want our partners to care for us and adore us, attracted to our physical bodies. Most want to have passionate sexual exchanges that include orgasms. We also want to be loved, appreciated and respected for who we are.

Being Right And Losing The Relationship War

Where we can get mis-directed is when we think of the opposite sex as the enemy. Relationships do not have to feel like war. Blaming our partners for how we feel is ego-based, codependent behavior. It is not productive while putting us in the position of
victim. None of us are victims. (I have flogged that dead horse in my first book,
Odyssey Victim to Victory.) This is my own story of recovery from childhood molestation. Odyssey holds keys to loving yourself and become a fully functional independent, sexual being.

No one wants to be made wrong. Our egos get in the way, with finger pointing. When we are told we are wrong, we can shut down emotionally. We cannot listen fully. We stop being able to hear what other person is saying without being reactive. The issue with wanting to be right causes us to be so focused on being right, that we miss the truth, the good stuff - the loving. We make our partner angry. We make our partner wrong. Our egos become activated and we run away from connection, closeness and intimacy.

Instead of pointing fingers at the other person, it is more productive to look at why you feel the way you do? Usually our reaction to what the other person has said has nothing to do with why we are angry. We are often triggered by our partner. Which is to say, we
Pointing fingers never solves anything
are reacting to an old wound or button placed within us by a family member, usually a parent, relative, teacher or close friend.
Often the screaming is loudest when we pick at the scab of old wounds. It is our old wounds that need to be healed to be able to move on from the past, rather than being stuck in our stories. We can become so focused on what happened in the past that we feel our current partner is also doing the same thing to us.

Our patterns resurface like an old broken record that repeats the same refrain until someone pushes us beyond where we have gone before. Which is why I so love the healing aspects of working with hypnotherapy and energy healing. I see my coaching clients move beyond their stuckness, with control and ridigity into fluidity and forward movement. Their fears fall away while ease, trust with happiness build. Using a hypnotherapy process to release the trigger mechanism, I have witnessed clients move beyond their fears, embracing the love and the beauty within.

Issues with challenges in life will always arise. Using words like “never,” “always” and “should” create issues. Jonathan Robinson, author of Communication Miracles for Couples: Easy and Effective Tools to Create More Love and Less Conflict, uses a wonderful, easy way to help couples resolve conflict effortlessly.
Robinson says we each have a self esteem bank account. The lower our self esteem is, the less we can take critiscm or finger pointing. We need to feel acknowledged, appreciated as well as accepted by our partners.

I agree with this concept having come from a place of low self-esteem as a child. When my husband criticised me for something I was doing, it sounded like my parents were speaking to me. I went back emotionally to my memory bank, to the place of not feeling acknowledged and accepted as a child. Our minds are so powerful. The tapes re-wind in a milisecond. Instantly we are like a little child, rather than a mature adult. Going back to the place of our innerchild often happens with couples. It is not what is occurring in the moment that has them upset. It is the connecting of the dots from this moment to a point in time that was painful.

When we argue, often it is two children who have been wounded that show up rather than the adults that we are. Two little wounded children cannot resolve anything. They tend to pick up their toys and run away. This is a trigger mechanism. Until the trigger is cleared, this process will continue. This is one of my areas of
expertise.
My own experience of being reactive with volatility in relationships has made me an expert on uncovering these triggers for my clients. De-sensitizing them to the point that the trigger is no longer present, within one session - no more trigger!

Robinson’s recommendation is to acknowledge how the other person is feeling first. Most of us that have been through therapy know about this tactic. However, his process goes on to create better communication with your partner. Acknowledging how they feel is not the same as agreeing with them. Once you acknowledge how they feel, they can hear you better. They feel validated, knowing you truly care.

Accept the other person’s version of reality. This does not mean you agree. For example, Jane tells her husband, “I see how you feel blamed by me. “ I’m very sorry you felt that way.” Next, Robinson suggests that you tell your partner something that you appreciate about them when you are not angry with them. “You are really important to me, and I love the way you work so hard to take care of our family.” Giving your partner something that you appreciate about them, allows them to let their guard down to feel less defensive.

The first thing that Robinson says we need to do when things get heated, is to acknowledge the other person’s experience. For example, as David is cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, his wife, Judith suggests, “Why don’t you use this scrub brush instead of the sponge.” David reacts, “Why do you have to nag at me whenever I try to help you?” His wife, Judith might retort, “I am not nagging at you, you just wash dishes like a two-year old and you need some help.” Her off-hand, seemingly innocuous response might create a huge argument.

David might think to himself, “She can kiss my white ass! I’ll never freaking help her prissy little butt ever again!” David’s little inner boy is showing up, because he feels wounded. Lower levels of self-esteem make us more reactive and argumentative. Accurate, intelligent communication is a delicate art. It is the key to keeping a relationship balanced and communications open.

When we are highly reactive, it throws up ego-barriers destroying closeness, open-heartedness, love and joy. Our little inner child (ego) is quick to judge or attack which shuts us down. What I believe Robinson is trying to show with this example is; how our egos can distort our communication, love-making and sexual functions.

If Judith had used Robinson’s formula for communication, she might have said, “I hear you saying that I treat you like you’re a child when you are doing household tasks. I am sorry that you feel I am putting you down.” After being acknowledged, then validated, Judith’s husband may relax feeling heard and understood. Judith would then let David know how much she appreciates her husband for helping her out, while lifting some of the burden from her.
Robinson reminds us, you don’t have to agree with the way your partner is feeling.

Remember, each of you is having your own experience. Three people can watch the same scene in a movie, then interpret a totally different experience. We all have filters which change the reality we experience. These filters are created by our egos.

Acknowledgement, says Robinson, creates trust. I believe, that the trust issues that Robinson speaks of is one of the most important issues in sexual functionality. The more you validate your partner’s experience the more you build trust.

As an example, of how experience effects judgment; I was traumatized sexually by men, as a young girl.  As an adult I made men wrong, because of what men did to me when I was little. I was tainted by my childhood experience. This experience created a lens that all men were bad and only wanted sex from me. I confused sex with love mis-judging my male partners. Men would say things to me, which I would take out of context. This created mis-communication and served to put a damper on our sexual activities. The key to having good sex and gangbuster orgasms is to see things clearly, rather than through our filters or egos.

Acknowledging that your partner is really having the experience they are, even if you don’t agree with them allows them to feel heard. It also enhances communication and understanding. Understanding is one of the biggest issues within our relationships. We sometimes think very differently. We often come from various backgrounds. Our issues and trigger mechanisms can be totally unrelated. Each of us is having our own individual experience of the same thing. It does not mean that your perception is wrong. Accurate perceptions however, bring each of us nearer to the truth, regardless of our individual perceptual bias.

Having conflict resolved immediately keeps the air clear. Replying, “I’m fine!” When we are not, keeps us tied up in illusion and separation. We make up stories in our heads based on our past, which have little bearing on realtiy. This process should be avoided if you want good sex and great orgasms. The fragility of the human psyche guarantees that conflict will occur as our egos clash between male and female in the sexual act. It is also the point at which we can have the deepest connection.

What You Need To Know About This Year's 4 Mercury Retrogrades

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Mercury the planet that rules intellect, speech and communication will have four retrograde periods in 2016, instead of the typical three. For most people that have experienced the challenges of living through three Mercury Retrogrades per year, having the added bonus of a fourth may prove too much. Instead of crawling into a box and closing the lid, or hiding in your closet for twelve weeks of the year, I have some suggestions for you to use this time constructively.

For those born during a Mercury Retrograde, communication has probably been a challenge for you most of your life. When you master your challenges, you step into your soul purpose. I have learned a thing or two about making the most out of a negative situation, I was born during both a Venus and Mercury Retrograde. I had challenges with love and communication for half of my life.

What Is A Retrograde?

A retrograde is when a planet slows down and appears to have a backward rotation.

What Changes During A Mercury Retrograde?

During Mercury Retrograde periods there is more road rage, miscommunication, arguments, issues with contracts, break-ups, computer, phone, coupled with issues regarding travel and vehicles.

When Is Mercury Retrograde In 2016?

January 5 -       January 25th till 4:44 PM EST
April 28 -         May 22nd
August 30 -      September 22nd
December 19 - January 8, 2017

There are do's and don'ts that will help you navigate this energy and use it to your advantage, rather than allowing it to get the best of you. Just like a relative that you wish would leave, the more you focus on the positive contributions that your relative makes, the easier their visit becomes, so does the Mercury Retrograde.

What Is Beneficial During A Mercury Retrograde?

Be impeccable with your word!

Communication needs to be clear or break-ups, arguments could easily occur.

Mercury Retrograde are a great time to plan, set goals, write, organize, reduce, and re-think strategy. It is the best time to clear out the clutter that has been plaguing you. The following are the best uses of this energy:

DO
  1. Clean out your e-mail inbox.
  2. Clean out duplicate or poor quality photos on your computer.
  3. Clean out papers out of file drawers.
  4. Organize closets, pantries, and storage areas.
  5. Purge. Get rid of what you don't use, or don't wear. Give it away to a charity where it can be re-used by someone who really needs it.
  6. Get rid of broken items
  7. Prepare taxes, but don't file them.
  8. Review contracts, but don't sign them.
  9. Think about selling your home or property, but don't list.
  10. Research buying something new, but do not buy luxury items; especially appliances, cars, computers, boats, RVs or cell phones.
  11. Clear text strings.
  12. Get rid of magazines and newspapers.
  13. Review insurance programs.
  14. Review check registers, looking for errors or overcharges.
  15. Reorganize closets.
  16. Repair things that are broken.
  17. Re-cycle.
  18. Return library books, gifts and things you don't want to keep.
  19. Repay debt.

As you can see, this time, is a fabulous time to "RE-VIEW, REPAIR, REORGANIZE, RECYCLE, RESTRUCTURE and RETURN.

The Universe LOVES ORDER!
Use this time to get your office, home, car, computer e-mail, and cell phone in order.

Going back to a place you have already traveled to will net you greater rewards during this time than traveling to someplace new. You will travel with greater ease when you RETURN.

My first trip to India was during a Mercury Retrograde. My first flight leg was canceled. I had to race through
the airport to get on another flight before anyone else did, got the last seat and barely made my connection to India. When I arrived in India, my luggage didn't. All of these events are typical during a Mercury Retrograde. Imagine arriving in India without any extra underwear or clothing. I had to buy and manage for five days till my luggage finally arrived.

My best recommendation is not to do any of the following. I understand that if you travel for a living, it can't be helped. If you must travel, give yourself plenty of time and carry on a change of clothes and toothbrush!

DON'T Do Any Of These For Best Results:

  1. Get married.
  2. Get engaged.
  3. Sign contracts.
  4. Buy a house.
  5. Sell a house.
  6. List a house for sale.
  7. Buy a computer
  8. Buy luxury items
  9. Buy a computer
  10. Buy a cell phone
  11. Buy a car
  12. Buy a boat
  13. Break-up if you mean it. Your break-up won't last. You will be back together before you know it and breaking up again during the next retrograde.
  14. Travel to new places if you can help it.
I know of many couples who attempted to break-up during Mercury Retrogrades and promptly ended up getting back together.

Jennifer Anniston got married during a Venus Retrograde. I tried to warn her, but she wouldn't listen. Marriage or engagements made during this time sadly rarely last. If you want the best chance for survival, wait till the Retrograde ends.

The Good news is that Venus does not go retrograde until March 2017. What does this mean? 2016 is a great year to meet, fall inlove and get married - even if you have had difficulty in the past. You might want to get your energy cleared to give yourself the best opportunity for LOVE!

Where Do You FOCUS?

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

We are all individuals having our own experience. We have our own opinions. Through our thoughts we come to our own conclusions. Individuals can view the same thing. Each person will see something different even though they are viewing the exact, same thing. They view through their own filters. Our conditioning from our family of origin, life experiences from the past, is the lens we view life and relationships through. We all see very different things. Part of the human condition is to look at the negative aspect first, when we don't have sufficient information.  It is where our mind quickly goes. We judge. We criticize, or critique. When we move instantaneously into judgment, our ego mind is engaged, rather than our compassionate hearts. We need to guide our conscious mind to view things in a positive way, without judgment, and without our lens from past events. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Which means everyone has a very different view of what is beautiful to them.
Joshua trees in the distance

After a month absence from my beloved Mojave desert, I walked early in the morning, while a slight frost was still on the ground. Everything was fresh and crisp. The sun was beginning to rise above the horizon and glinting off the broken glass here and there. I walked in silence looking across the vast expanse of silent sand. The Joshua trees and blooming Rabbitbrush dotted the flat, high plain. I feel a deep sense of peace and quiet here.  One could walk for hours without seeing another human being. There are few places in the United States where only one exit from town can you be in the wilderness.

Household debris

I took photos in all of the directions and wondered what others would think, if they were dropped out of an airplane and left here.

Would they hate it? What would they see? What would be a stranger's focus?

an unwanted above ground pool
In relationships, we listen to our partners speak. We watch their every move and can look at them with love, compassion or judgment and criticism. I mused this early morning, that the way we look at landscape, or the world around us, can govern where we bring our focus in relationships. Each of us is a work in progress. That is why we are in a physical body on this planet, earth. Our purpose is to learn, grow and evolve. If we were perfect we would be somewhere else, playing a harp or singing in an angelic choir. We aren't angels. We are humans. Flesh and blood with issues, challenges as well as limitations.

Each day we have choices. Where we choose to focus our attention is what we receive in return. If we are compassionate to others, we receive compassion in return. If we constantly ridicule, focus on other's imperfections and quirks; imperfections and quirks are what we see.

Rabbit den
Many people choose to take the "easy way out." Rather than go an extra four miles and take their trash to the free landfill, they go under the cover of darkness and covertly dump their debris when they think no one is looking.

I could focus on the irresponsible actions of the people who would rather trash the desert than drive the additional four miles to drop their building debris or cast-offs at the county landfill. But that would require them being responsible, caring or showing up at the appropriate times that the dump is opened. Not everyone is awake and conscious of the impact of their actions. Many people only think of themselves, rather than the footprint that they leave behind. I choose to focus on the pristine beauty that I see when I look in the other directions away from the debris. I can choose to walk in places where there is little or no trash on the sandy road. Our focus is a matter of our choosing.

Acceptance Versus Condemnation

Do you choose to focus on the fact that your partner makes a weird face when they are focused on something intensely? Thinking how much you hate that face they make? Or do you choose to think of them with lovingly acceptance and those characteristics as a part of the one you love. Do you look at your partner with eyes of love and acceptance, or through eyes of hate, judgment and perfectionism?

BLESS YOUR SPOUSE

For several years when I first lived in Georgia, I attended Mount Bethel United Methodist church. The preacher, Randy Mickler, a big Georgia Bulldogs football fan, was and still is a fabulous minister. His sermons were heartfelt, profoundly inspiring and memorable. One particular sermon spoke to me, as I was having issues in my marriage. He spoke of "Blessing your spouse." He went on to say, that instead of focusing on what you don't like about your spouse, and complaining; to BLESS THEM. This entails speaking highly of them. Revering them with your thoughts and words. He said to never speak ill of your spouse to another.

To this day, I have worked to live by these words with everyone I meet. When we focus on the good, rather than the negative, we magnify the good and the negative fades away. Randy Mickler has been the pastor at Mount Bethel for over 27 years. That says a lot about him and his teachings. His services are streamed live and the podcasts can be found on their website, on the media tab.

Here is the link if you are interested. http://mtbethel.org/

What You Focus On GROWS!

When I attended Mt. Bethel, I was married to an obsessive compulsive man. Dogs would sometimes bark in nearby yards at night. He would focus like a laser on that barking dog, getting more upset with each bark. I chose not to pay attention to the dog's noise, rolling over to fall asleep. He would angrily throw the covers off and stomp out of bed. He would throw up the window, yell out the windows at the barking dog, becoming even more upset. All his anger and focus on the barking dog served no positive benefit. In fact, his focus caused more suffering. He made up stories in his head about the people and how they deliberately left their dog barking to disrupt his rest. "How could they be so disrespectful and ill mannered (among other things)?"

Focus On Beauty and Beauty Is What You See
Chrysothamnus (Rabbitbrush)

Choosing to focus on the good, will change the way you view the world around you and your relationships. It is like being happy. You can choose each day to focus on the negative, like the fact that you stubbed your toe. Amplifying the negative will turn the rest of your day into a downhill slide. Or you could do an about face and think, "Good things are happening in my life right now!" Even rain changes to sunshine eventually.

It is my prayer that with through proceeds of my book, Orgasm For Life, I will enlist the people of Mojave and Rosamond to help clean up the debris and trash in the Mojave desert, restoring it to it's original pristine beauty. It is a beautiful place. Awareness of the fact that each of us has a personal responsibility to clean up our own issues. Through coaching, spiritual practise and focus we each will awaken and become conscious. With consciousness comes responsibility for our personal actions. Like picking up after ourselves, our dogs and taking trash to the waste receptacle or dump. Whether the debris you clear out is personal to you or your relationship, you help to raise the vibration of the world by doing so. Isn't it time you did your part?
