4 Reasons Why Gratitude Is So Important

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Gratitude is the act of being thankful for and appreciative of what we have. It is a powerful way to turn your thoughts around and open your heart. Gratitude is important daily, not just for around the holidays.

1. Gratitude will stave off negativity and help us show appreciation. Gratitude will shift your negativity quickly pulling you out of despair. Rather than focusing on our problems gratitude helps you recognize what you do have. Gratitude opens our hearts and shifts a spiral of despair into creativity and clarity. Gratitude helps us manifest our desires.

We begin to appreciate others when we express gratitude. Gratitude shifts our focus quickly. Showing appreciation to others makes them feel valued and loved.

2. Gratitude improves your mental attitude. A negative attitude will affect relationships, success, and connections. People tend to avoid those that are negative. You will find yourself infinitely more successful with a positive attitude than with a negative one. Writing in a journal just before bed will help you focus on all the good in your life and shift your dreams to positive visions for your future. Relationships improve when our attitude is positive.

3. Gratitude stops complaining. Whining and moaning about life robs your life of joy. When we complain we end up in a downward spiral, wallowing in despair and self-pity. Instead of "I have too much work to do, the kids are so noisy, or my husband has cancer," gratitude helps you shift to the positive. "I am thankful to have a job, good health, children, that love me and a husband that is alive."

4. Gratitude helps us recognize that life is a gift. There is no promise of a tomorrow. We only have today. Each day  we wake up is another gift. When we begin to say prayers of gratitude for each day, we appreciate the smaller things in life, which make life worth living.

As soon as our eyes are open saying a prayer of gratitude helps us recognize just waking up in the morning is a big thing. We take life

for granted. Gratitude shifts us into a higher state where we begin to see the beauty around us.

There are times when finding something to be grateful for is a challenge. Find something simple, like having a roof over your head, food on the table and your rent or mortgage paid. Each small thing will help you be more positive and feel better about what you do have.
