The Inner Secret of Doing Yoga You Didn't Realize

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr.

Gurus do it. Tantrikas do it. Famous movie stars do it. But what is yoga good for? Almost everything! From depression to anxiety, sleep disorders to PTSD, yoga not only gets you fit but relaxes you, relieving stress.

I started doing yoga thirty-five years ago while living in England. I had a delightful teacher who did a deep meditative practice at the end which I loved. Since that time, I found many teachers, but the meditation part was often skipped or glossed over for fear of offending someone.

Today, my meditation practice happens daily no matter what. Yoga is something I do in the desert and sometimes in a studio. Yoga can be done in your living room, your backyard or at the beach. All you need is you.

For those of you that think yoga is for sissies, think again. Even Robert Downey Jr., Russell Brand, Bon Jovi and Sting do yoga

Yesterday, I did a particularly difficult hot yoga class. But also not only did I sweat my ass off, all the up and down dogs in the flow class moved my emotions. At the end of the class when asked to give ourselves a hug, I cried. As I held myself in a loving embrace emotions within me came out and up. My tears surprised me. Crying relieves stress and releases hormones that make us feel good. Moving our bodies allows us to release whatever needs to be released. Whatever issues come up in our work day yoga helps us process.

Deep Breathing

The deep breathing in yoga can help children and adults in many ways. Deep breathing can help with pain management, stress relief, asthma, autism and so many others. Most people don't breathe deeply enough. Yoga gives you so many opportunities to change old patterns with something as simple as breathing deeply. Just check in right now. Notice how you are breathing. Maybe you are holding your breath. Most people breathe shallowly which causes many issues later in life, COPD is one of them. Our lungs need to expand fully with our breath so that they fill up completely.

One of my clients has advanced COPD. She is on oxygen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. She is unable to travel without oxygen or even go for a walk without dragging that tank behind her like a ball and chain. Think about living a life like that. Breathing deeply is one of the biggest benefits of yoga. Deep breathing helps all our organs function better. Oxygen is needed for vibrant health, rich blood that feeds our muscle tissues all the way down to our cells.

Yoga and Sex

Madonna back bend
Deep breathing and yoga improve your sex life, oxygenating your body and lengthening and strengthening orgasms. Yoga helps you move into deep stretches while breathing which allow more flexibility and less pain during sex. You might not like Madonna, but you have to admire her ability to do back bends and have an amazingly toned body. How does she do it? Yoga!

Want A Great Butt?

Yoga tones will lift and will give you a great butt at any age. Stretching is good for the body. Take it slow. You don't have to begin doing shoulder stands or handstands.

Just Some Benefits of Yoga

  • improves muscle strength
  • improves flexibility
  • protects us from arthritis, back pain later in life
  • improves balance which prevents falls
  • perfects your posture
  • opens your heart
  • oxygenates the blood improving cardiovascular health
  • protects the spine
  • improves bone health (helping calcium to stay in the bones)
  • drains lymphatic system and improves immune function
  • regulates adrenal glands - keeping us sexually able
  • lowers blood sugar
  • helps you focus
  • makes you happier
  • releases tension in the limbs
  • helps you sleep more deeply
  • prevents IBS and other digestive issues
  • gives you peace of mind
  • helps you stay in your body
  • keeps you present in the moment
  • helps you release emotions
  • helps you evolve spiritually
Mom turning 95 in 2017
I do yoga for all of the above reasons and a few others I haven't mentioned because I plan to live a very long life. I want to be healthy when I am in my late nineties and beyond. I don't want to carry an oxygen tank around with me or be hunched over as I age. Yoga keeps us young, vital and healthy. Love yourself enough to take care of your body so that you are fit, youthful when you reach 70, 100 or beyond!

I love you!

Monday Morning Blues? 5 Ways to Increase Seratonin Levels Without Drugs

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

What if I could tell you that you can get high without perscription drugs? Serotonin is the feel-good hormone that is produced in the brain. Following these suggestions daily will naturally increase the levels of this wonderful hormone to feel happy, joyful and high on life!

1. Mindfulness Meditation

Meditation has been scientifically proven to increase serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain and enhance mood. Meditation also increases the ability to synthesize serotonin, which is a double-positive-whammy of good feelings.

Meditation has been proven to prevent depression relapses creating a shift in focus from negative emotions to a state of relaxed positivity. Negative moods are related to negative outcomes.

Mindful meditation focuses on breath and bodily sensations rather than on problems and issues. Mindfulness and meditation both allow the individual to focus on what they are feeling rather than the problem or issue that is arising.

Sitting in meditation only ten minutes a day can improve your mood, reduce pain and shift your emotional state from low to high.

A positive mood increases longevity as it increases your connection with something greater than yourself.  Instead of feeling alone, you feel connected.

2. Get Outside in The Sunlight. We need light to be happy. Exposure to light all year round has been proven to raise serotonin levels in the brain. Not only has sunlight been linked to seasonal depression cures but also non-seasonal depression. Our internal workings are light-filled. The sun is our source of light and joy. The great thing about sunshine is that it is free.

3. Conscious Lovemaking. Making love with someone you care about and have a connection with will increase levels of dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. All these chemicals increase your level of well-being and connection, which are essential to feeling high on life. Loving touch increases our well-being and happiness. Feeling down? Make love.

4. Exercise daily. Serotonin dopamine, and endorphins increase with daily exercise. All of these hormones make you feel good. The best form of exercise to improve your mood is aerobic exercise.

Do some form of exercise you love. For me, it is dancing. I love music as it can shift my mood quickly while moving my body feels good, tones and charges me up with those feel-good hormones. Music has been proven to increase your level of engagement in an exercise and push you to higher limits of ability and challenge. The brain's ability to use serotonin also increases with exercise. Daily exercise keeps you in the zone of feeling happy

Take a walk where flowers and trees abound. Enjoy the beauty wherever you are.

5. Breathe consciously. People who breathe deeply affirm life. Those who hold their breath and breathe shallowly have a low sense of self, or low self-esteem. Affirm life daily by breathing deeply. If you forget, set your phone to chime every hour and spend a few minutes breathing deeply.

My daughter recently went through a breakup. She called me while walking. At the end of our conversation she reported feeling high. She was walking quickly and talking to me while she walked. She was breathing more deeply because of the intense exercise. It was a big surprise to her to see how much better she felt with the deep breathing and brisk walking.

From someone who has grown up in the 70's I know what getting high feels like. The high I experience daily without drugs is far superior to the high back then low of taking drugs or drinking alcohol.

Tread Softly This Holiday

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

As I wrap up my time here in Boulder, Colorado in the cold and head for warmer weather in Toronto, Canada a word of caution for this Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. A lovely combination of the slowing of the planet Uranus (which is known for destroying and undoing) coupled with the last full moon of 2015, could increase challenges, difficulties, and communication. Emotions could be stronger than usual and triggered abruptly.

Just a few suggestions to help you navigate those dinner-time conversations when embarrassing questions are asked about your upcoming engagement, pregnancy or promotion. If you are single, like me, there are often questions about when we are going to grow up or get a real job. This is for you! This article is written tongue in cheek, we all need a better sense of humor when spending time with family members and loved ones.

  1. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer pretend you didn't hear and ask for more mashed potatoes.
  2. When asked how many cats or dogs you now have tell the inquiring person you are starting your own non-profit shelter and have a no kill policy.
  3. When your children are critiqued by grandma or grandpa, smile at the octogenarian and tell them that you encourage creativity and individuality, rather than following the crowd. You are raising an individual, a world-changer. World changers are different and bounce to a different beat. Thanks for noticing Grandma! Don't forget to tell her how much you appreciate her wisdom and input.
  4. If someone tells you that you have gained weight, tell them that you just won a hot dog eating contest and haven't taken all your winnings off as yet.
  5. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you can just as easily answer the above question about weight gain that you are trying out a new collagen booster and it may look as if you have gained weight, but it is really just collagen.
  6. If you are slaving in the kitchen and no one is helping, tell your guests that the good news is that they get to eat today! The bad news is that they get to help put dinner together! Get some
    help. Don't do everything yourself.
  7. I have a very dysfunctional family. I smile and nod a lot while eating my food. I don't get triggered by their attempts to put me down for being a "hippie coach," or "whatever you do...."
  8. Eat less and chew more. When we are upset our digestive system doesn't work as well. Anxiety and food don't mix. Breathe and smile. Know that you are only connected by DNA. Love, love, love is what they all need.
  9. As the penguins in the movie, Madagascar say, "Smile and wave boys! Smile and wave!" Know you will be leaving soon and this holiday will be a fond memory before you know it! Tell family members how much you love them, no matter how annoying they might be after several days.
  10. Make your presence the important part of Christmas, rather than the presents the focus. Time spent in conversation with loved ones mean so much to those we don't see often. Enjoy
them while you have them, life is short and we all end up taking a dirt nap at the end of our road, so make the time while you are here happy and enjoyable. Don't get caught up in who did what to whom. You are no longer 8!
December 29, 2014
Wishing you a wonderful and happy Christmas. Tread softly and spread the love. Smile more and breathe deeply. There is plenty of time to sleep at the end of the road! I am off to Toronto to spend Christmas with my 93-year old mother. We just don't know what tomorrow may bring, make the best of today, no matter what.

Orgasm For Life - With Hollis Chapman -

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Hollis Chapman interviewed me today on BlogTalk Radio about my forthcoming book: Orgasm For Life

The link is below to the interview.

Why did I write it?
What inspired me? God
40 % of women are sexually dysfunctional - and non-orgasmic
The purpose of writing this book was to bring men and women together and bridge the chasm between us.

Our communication isn't there. Women are afraid to speak up about what they need and what they want.

80% of women are faking it
26% are faking it ALL THE TIME
How do we change this? How can we communicate better with one another so that our sex lives can improve.

  1. Connect through eye contact with your partner
  2. Talk to your partner throughout the sex act
  3. Continue to talk to your partner so that they stay with you - instead of disconnecting and dissocociateing from their experience.
  4. Keep your mouth opened and relaxed. Relax your jaw.
  5. An orgasm is about letting go. Surrender to the experience
  6. Breathe - with an open mouth so that other parts of the body can open that need to and relax.
  7. Communicate with your partner about what feels good.
  8. Let your partner know what feels good.
