Feeling Sorry For Yourself? Beware of How Anger and Self-Pity Made Me Sick at Christmas

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Mel, Adam, Me and Ariel, SouthPark CO

I discovered this past Christmas how we can keep ourselves vibrantly healthy with our thoughts of gratitude and conversely how quickly our health can be taken away when we get upset (angry or hurt) and take our health for granted.

"To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him." ~Buddha

I have not been sick in years. In fact, I can't remember the last time I got a cold, the flu or anything. Focusing on how I feel in any given moment rather than on what others are doing is a large part of why I feel so happy with myself and my life. I know that being happy and grateful have been paramount in my healthy constitution. Daily meditation and being content with my life, fulfilled by my work all have contributed to my daily inner peace.

What I am about to share is giving you inside information of both my life and how we create disease and illness with our thoughts and emotions. Putting these two things together could save you from serious illness and even cancer later on.
Karma is a part of my family she loves to travel with me

When I visit my children in Colorado, I drive. Why do I drive? Besides the fact that driving is enjoyable to me, I drive because I bring my dogs who are part of my family in my car. Karma is going on nineteen years old. Putting an old dog on a plane is both inhumane and inconsiderate. I won't do either to her.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

I also enjoy the drive across our beautiful country watching the change in topography from the beige sand and mundane landscape of the Mojave desert into Nevada, Los Vegas, Arizona, Utah then Colorado.

I watch the terrain and weather change become rocky and breathtakingly beautiful. Driving is a moving meditation. I usually drive in the 1,000-mile drive in silence with occasional music when I feel fatigued. I am  always excited to see my family, so the drive is part of that experience.

I left home on December 13th so that I could help my daughter move from her apartment in Longmont where she had lived alone to Thornton where she and a college friend would share in the expenses. The trip from where I live in California with a stop in
Arizona to visit a client who just had a baby was 1,164 miles or 17 hours of drive-time.

I stopped at the home I was staying at to unload my car and finally arrived at my daughter's apartment in
Longmont, Colorado at 8:00 PM on the third day.

It was cold and snowy in Colorado when I arrived and didn't warm
up for days. Ariel was totally packed when I arrived, but waiting on tape that I brought with me. As soon as I arrived in Longmont, I began taping up boxes so that we would be ready for the move the
following day. It was after 11:00 PM before I was driving home to Boulder to sleep. To say I was already exhausted is an understatement. Ariel spent her last night in her apartment.

On Friday, December 16th, I was up at 6:00 AM. I grabbed something quick to eat, walked Yoda and Karma and loaded them in my cold car my breath making little white puffs of condensation and drove about twelve miles to Ariel's apartment.

We moved boxes around a little and dissembled her Queen-sized wooden bed frame so that it would fit through the narrow outdoor entryway of the girls' new apartment complex. I found it hard to believe that we needed to do this, but Ariel insisted and for good reason. I left Ariel's apartment with Yoda and Karma and picked up the U-haul truck in the cold.

I waited in line for over an hour while others were processed for their rental trucks by the one young Irish man that owned the dealership. I left my car and attempted to arrange the dogs in the cab of the truck. Karma was miserable on the cold floor with little space to lie down. In another twenty minutes, I was back at Ariel's apartment to load up.

Ariel's boyfriend threw the U-haul truck door quickly surreptitiously causing a spill immediately of Ariel's precariously placed belongings at the back of the truck onto the concrete sidewalk behind the truck. Her Brita water filter smashed and Ariel unleashed angry and ungrateful words onto Josh and then me. Ariel's temper was short from her stress over the move and lack of money and I was exhausted from my trip. The combination of all three of our emotions led to a stressful emptying of the truck.

Yoda still a puppy with Ariel

I suggested that the dogs should be at least allowed to stay in Ariel's bathroom or closet so they would be out of the way during the move-in as they were cold and uncomfortable in the truck. Ariel's response to me felt unappreciative of the travel the dogs and I had just made. Ariel won. The dogs lost. Karma's foot was bleeding from falling between the seats in the U-Haul. She wasn't a happy first dog nor was I.

Between the cold and the stairs my knees took a beating carrying heavy boxes down two flights and then up three flights of stairs at the new apartment.

Yoda was making his discomfort known in the cab of the cold U-haul truck. He had been barking for over an hour to get out of the truck. Even though I walked the dogs in a park before we began emptying the truck, he wasn't happy sitting alone.

Ariel didn't want the dogs in the apartment until we had totally unloaded. Both girls moved in simultaneously with her roommate's entire family present. Eleven people helping these two girls created bedlam for approximately three hours. I understood Ariel's reasoning about the dogs, but they had already spent three days in the back of a car on our long journey.

David with Ray

I was exhausted by 2:00 PM when the truck was emptied, David, my middle son showed up just in time to see us closing the U-haul truck door and we flopped on my daughter's bedroom floor sharing the pizza that I bought for everyone. David and another friend of Ariel's put her bed together and got her television and couch set up in the living room. Josh left in a huff before David arrived.

Beautiful Colorado

David followed me as I returned the U-Haul to a local dealership and took me back to Ariel's apartment, then Ariel drove me the thirty odd miles back up to Longmont to my icy cold car. I spent Friday night alone, all day Saturday alone and then went to Ariel's old apartment to clean it from top to bottom early Sunday morning, leaving my dogs in Boulder.

I cleaned the kitchen, oven, microwave, cabinets, pantry and in between the washer and dryer, the dryer vent while Ariel scrubbed the red, purple, green and various other hair dye colors from the tile and grout in her bathroom.

I made three trips to Home Depot and The Dollar Store buying cleaning products and stove replacement parts that were forgotten. I attempted to match her carpet color that had burn holes (Colorado is a legal state to smoke marijuana) and to remedy the hair dye stains on her grout.

We cleaned for ten hours missing a party we were invited to as we weren't done. Finally, at 8:00 PM we called it quits for the day. The burn holes in her living room and bedroom carpet from her recreational smoking remained. A $600 deposit hung in the
balance. I attempted to fix one burn hole in the living room without the aid of overhead lighting and gave up frustrated. I spent Sunday night alone.

Monday, Ariel was back at work and as I drove the 40 miles to Denver to meet with two of my long-term favorite clients, my son David called.
My oldest son Adam and his girlfriend Mel landed at
Mel, Adam Jennifer and Ariel near SouthPark, CO
the Denver airport at noon. Instead of coming to Boulder to stay with me David asked if I minded if they spent the night with him in Littleton, Co. I said no problem.

The next day, I was asked to be flexible again, changing my plans to accommodate their desire to stay at David's another night, leaving me in Boulder another night alone.

I hired with Mel's help a carpet installer to fix the burn holes for $125.00. I hired a carpet cleaning company and babysat and paid them. I spent most of the day Thursday back and forth from Home Depot, carpet stores trying to find the right carpet to match. I couldn't. I spent tons of money, time and energy helping Ariel to get her apartment in shape for her walkthrough.
I spent five days of my Christmas vacation working like a dog so that Ariel would get her deposit back.

Mel and Adam spent two nights with me at the house in Boulder. David joined us in Boulder one afternoon and we all, expect Ariel who was working walked through the shops and ate copious amounts of sugary treats. I was astounded at how much sugar we consumed when most of us don't eat it on a daily basis. We were mindlessly eating  sweets I feel because we were all together and sugar deprived!

I drove back and forth to Denver three more times and spent part of the afternoon shopping with my oldest children at an outlet mall. Shopping is one of my least favorite activities, but I did it for the family. That night we also fit in a trip to the Denver Botanical Gardens for their Christmas light show, which we all enjoyed in the snow.

The exact time-frame doesn't matter. What does matter is that I began to feel a combination of anger and self-pity. I had driven half-way across the country to be with my family and here I was was ~ alone. I love being alone. I enjoy my own company. However, I traveled 1,100 miles for days to spend time with my family. I could have stayed at home!

I could be alone in my own home in the sunny warmth of California! I didn't need to be freezing my ass off in Colorado winter spending my money on an ungrateful little girl who didn't seem to appreciate all I had done! I had spent very little time with David and Adam and felt unappreciated and angry. I sent texts to both Ariel and David that exemplified my emotional state.

I vented out loud in the kitchen to anyone who would listen. The dogs began to get nervous. My anger was coming from an old pain of being unappreciated. My kids loved me, I knew that, but in this moment I didn't feel it. I felt undervalued and angry. I woke up Christmas eve feeling weird, out of sorts and uncomfortable.

Ariel showed up with a chip on her shoulder (not chocolate) and her Kitchen Aid mixer, to grudgingly bake for a party we were attending that night. We were both exhausted. Both of us felt angry. We both ended up shouting at one another and Ariel was ready to go home to her apartment because she felt terrible she didn't have money for Christmas gifts.

A perfect storm of emotions, pain, suffering, self-pity created a toxic vortex for us both. That very night Ariel and I got sick we had similar manifestations of illness. My nose began to run, I sneezed and sneezed and felt a general malaise. I knew I was getting a sinus infection.

Sinus problems: Irritation to one person, someone close. I was obviously irritated with Ariel. I felt undervalued, unappreciated and taken for granted. I had spent five days doing things for her, spending my money, time and energy and felt she didn't care. MANTRA: I declare peace and harmony indwell me and surround me at all times. All is well. (Louis Hay You Can Heal Your Body)

Post-Nasal Drip: Inner crying, childish tears. Victim. MANTRA: I acknowledge and accept that I am the creative power in my world. I now choose to enjoy my life.

Colds Upper Respiratory Illness: Too much going on at once. Mental confusion, disorder. Small hurts. MANTRA: I allow my mind to relax and be at peace. Clarity and harmony are within me and surround me. All is well. (Louis Hay You Can Heal Your Body)

How To Choose Differently

I know how to move emotions and energy. I know how to clear myself. However, I was too stuck in my ego to clear myself. I was too stuck in my feelings of self-righteous indignation and self-pity to do all that I knew to do. I could have used my quick mood-changers. I could have breathed deeply and allowed myself to feel the feelings inside, I could have cried or breathed deeply and allow them to move through me.

I could have taken a fast-paced walk out in the cold and asked Mother Nature and the trees to clear me. I could have taken an Epsom salts bath and meditated. But I didn't. I was stuck in self-pity. No one was doing anything TO ME. I am not a victim. No one is a victim. I chose this. I invited all these events in. I watched as the illness began to engulf me. I wasn't grateful in this moment. I wasn't appreciating anyone else.

Learning From Experience

We always have a choice. We can choose differently for ourselves rather than be the victim. When we reside in self-righteousness we lose love. From an empowered place we can heal ourselves. We can tap, sing, breathe, meditate and move the energy through us rather than revel in the pain and suffering and stuckness. Our negative thoughts and toxic emotions create disease and even autoimmune issues and diseases, I know I used to have Fibromyalgia and Epstein Barr and auto-immune disease.

Away From Home

When we are out of our place of sacredness and sanctity of our own space we can feel out of sorts. I wasn't in my home. I wasn't in my sacred space. We have to be able to find a place where we can be safe to meditate and sit in silence. When we are exhausted we aren't present. Pushing our bodies beyond where they are comfortable isn't good either. I pushed myself too hard with the travel, seeing clients and then working physically, up and down stairs acting as a moving man. I was doing things I wasn't used to. All of this created a perfect storm for me to witness how we create illness for ourselves.

At home, I meditate twice a day most days. I sit in silence and have peace in my home. The last five days of my stay in Colorado I slept on the floor on an air mattress at David's apartment with five other people plus five dogs and two cats. It was lovely to be together with my family. However, it was too much time without alone time for me. There was no place for me to meditate alone. It was far too cold to sit outside on the ground and meditate. Everyone needs silence. Silence allows us to regroup, center and be one with all that is.

I would love to hear from you. Did this article help you in any way? Will it help you recognize how we create disease and illness with our choices? Please share this with your friends and family!

GRATITUDE

Whoever has gratitude will be given more!

Join me in this 28-day challenge it will only take fifteen minutes a night.

I said PRIZES!

I thought I would sweeten the pot a little to give you something other than more money, better relationships, more success and happiness in your life - as if that isn't enough. The point of this exercise is that nothing is impossible and magic is available to everyone. Couldn't you use a little more magic in your life?

Here's what you need to do if you choose to accept this challenge:
  1. Beginning today or as soon as you read this e-mail start noticing the good in your life.
  2. Write down each thing that you are grateful for. If you want better health, be grateful for your vibrant health. If you want more money, be grateful for all the money in your bank account, in your purse or wallet, and on its way to you right now! The more gratitude, the better your life will become. Don't focus on your outer circumstances.
  3. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
  4. Write down the list of items each night before turning off your light and going to sleep. The thoughts of gratitude right before sleep will be indelibly imprinted on your unconscious mind bringing more good to you.
  5. Find a rock that will fit in your hand and place it next to your bed. I am using an amethyst that was given to me for Christmas.
  6. Hold the rock in your hand and say out loud after you have written your list the best thing that occurred today that you are grateful for. Each night the energy of this gratitude will expand the energy of this rock.
  7. Eventually, all you will have to do is look at the rock and feel gratitude!
  8. If you need some help refer to my blog or send me an email: JenniferElizabethMasters@gmail.com

Send me an update once a week, or whenever something seems exciting enough to mention. Write down your successes even when they are small - like your cell phone provider gave you an extra day to pay your phone bill because a check hadn't cleared with the bank holiday. That my friends is a great thing! Whether it seems big or small, write it down.

I wish you the best year yet!

Much Love,
Jennifer

I Absolutely Love and Adore My Family!

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

My wish for you this day is the love and peace you so deserve. Christmas is about joy, I wish you so much joy!

I love my family. This year all of my children and their partners will get together for a week of Christmas celebrating, rock climbing, hiking, game playing, and painting. We celebrate like nobody's business. Our Christmas is unorthodox, just like we are.

We don't drink alcohol. We don't go to church. We are however extremely spiritual. We treat each other the way we wanted to be treated and speak our truth. We have all come a long way on this journey of life. I am so pleased with how evolved my entire family has become.

Near SouthPark, CO
We are conscious. We are self-aware and loving. We don't always agree with what the other might say, but at the same time, we are in a place where we can be okay with what others are doing and creating with their lives. We don't have to agree all the time to be overjoyed to spend time with one another.

David with Ray and Jennifer
My family is one of my biggest joys. I am happiest when I am with my adult children. In fact, I usually make at least four trips to Colorado where we spend time together every year.

I left my home on Tuesday and have been making my way with my dogs, heavy gear, boots, warm sweaters and presents to give. Giving to my family is a great joy to me. This year we decided to keep the spending low, but the joy quotient high. The emphasis isn't on the gift, but the love we feel for one another instead.

Adam taking center stage running the art studio
We do activities together. We walk our dogs together. We hike, paint, take road trips and play Cards Against Humanity. Why? We all love adventure. Couple all these activities with a joy of simply being together and you have some wide open hearts!

We laugh and enjoy each other's company while communing with nature, being creative and just being together. Adam loved to paint and began following his dream to do so when we first moved to Boulder in 2011. He encouraged us all to pick up paint brushes two years ago. Painting at Christmas has become a tradition for our family. I have three of the paintings hanging in my home today.

Bill Gates, Adam Gates, Ariel, me and Josh
So today, I finish up my 1,100-mile trip and land in Boulder, Colorado. We are all so excited to see one another. We don't dread our time together, it is just the opposite. I don't tell my kids how to live their lives, and they accept my weird ways. What they don't know is that I am going to treat them all with a hypnosis session this Christmas.

Ask yourself; I am happiest when ___________________.

I am happiest when I am with my family having fun, cooking, painting, walking, playing enjoying what I have created with God.

hiking with my ex-husband Bill Gates, Adam, and David
I have a great relationship with my boy's father and had a great relationship with Rich until he transitioned. I don't fight with anyone anymore. Life is too short, have a ball!

Adam's heart painting is the backdrop for my videos on YouTube.

3 Ways To Prevent Mercury Retrograde From Ruining Christmas

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Monday, December 19 marks the beginning of the final Mercury Retrograde of 2016. We will all breathe a sigh of relief when this year ends, but even more so because we will be ending this last year of the 9-year cycle reviewing, reviving, renewing and reorganizing with the energy of a Mercury Retrograde.

For those of you that know the drill, you can skip to another one of my blog articles and read about sex or love instead. The three ways to prevent Mercury Retrograde from ruining Christmas are:

1) don't do anything on the don't list.
2) do anything frequently on the do list
3) make sure you don't forget what is on the don't list!

Here are my do's and don'ts to navigate the Mercury Retrograde with ease and grace:

Ignore The Don't List At Your Own Risk
  1. Don't buy luxury items or expensive items after December 19th as you won't be happy with them when Mercury turns direct on January 8th.
  2. Don't wait until the last minute to buy presents for your family and loved ones as if you shop after December 19th they won't like what you bought and you will also feel disappointed.
  3. If you meet Mr. or Ms. Right at your office or neighborhood Christmas party; don't buy wedding invitations just yet, as it won't last.
  4. Don't get engaged this Christmas either as your engagement won't last.
  5. Don't get married until after January 8th, or your marriage won't last and you will feel regret.
  6. Don't travel to new places during a Mercury Retrograde if you can help it as you could experience any of the following: lost luggage, missed or canceled flights, missed connections, you might not like the destination you chose or the people you meet there.
  7. Don't get your hair cut or do anything drastic with surgery or color during a Mercury Retrograde.
Do More of This For A Successful and Merry Christmas

  1. Complete your shopping prior to December 19th, doing so will ensure the happiest of gift giving and receiving.
  2. Relax during this Mercury Retrograde.
  3. Renew your energy.
  4. Refresh your car.
  5. Reorganize your office.
  6. Redo your plan for 2017.
  7. Reorganize anything.
  8. Recover from the holiday shopping that you did early.
  9. Rekindle a romance from the past. Interestingly, you can meet up with someone you once knew and things could work out, but not with someone you never knew.
  10. Repair your marriage or relationship.
I wish you all the happiest of Mercury Retrogrades and Christmas and enjoy reuniting with loved ones, that is exactly what I am doing when I re-turn to Colorado to re-visit my daughter and sons, giving the gifts that I bought before the retrograde began.

Much Love,
Jennifer

I am announcing the fact that I am re-booting my From Tainted To True Love course in January (I can do that during a Mercury Retrograde!)

Do You Make Everyone Else's Happiness Your Responsibility?

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

I remember Christmas when my children were little. I was careful to buy equal priced gifts for each child. No matter how hard I tried, my oldest son always felt disappointed. Even when I spent more on him, he felt disappointed, as if I could never give him enough.

I felt my stomach sink each year as the presents were unwrapped and the bows and ribbons picked up and thrown away. I made my son's happiness my responsibility. I used to be so concerned about what others thought and how they felt about me

When we put conditions on our happiness, we block our ability to be happy. Sometimes we are self-destructive and don't even know it, which leads to even more challenges in our lives.

When we make statements like the following:

  • I'll be happy when ______________(I'm in a relationship, am at the perfect weight, have the perfect job, have _____ money, move to a different location.
  • We'll be happy when we're married.
  • We'll be happy when we have a (or another) baby.
  • I'll be happy when all my family is together.
  • I'll be happy when I'm retired.
  • I'll be happy when I can have sex.
..... we block our happiness.

Happiness comes from you, not an outside circumstance. When we don't love ourselves completely, we place conditions on our happiness. We make other's happiness our responsibility. No amount of presents will fill someone up that is running on empty. Love has to come from within to fill us up and make us feel loved.

The Truth

No one can else make us happy. Happiness doesn't come from material things like a house, new car or clothes. Material things bring us fleeting rushes, but not permanent happiness. A relationship might bring excitement to you at first, but if you aren't happy with you first, it can bring you more pain.

Thinking that making others happy will bring you happiness is putting their happiness ahead of yours. Each person is responsible for being happy with themselves. Happiness comes from being happy with who we are as we are.

How Do We Get Past This?

I understand, I really do. For half of my life, I was miserable with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and a slew of failed relationships. Because I didn't respect myself, others didn't respect me either. I attracted men who wouldn't value me because I didn't value myself. I didn't love me and lived in denial of that fact, so the men I loved cheated. I kept attracting men who were emotionally unavailable because I was also. It was far easier to point out the other person's flaws and faults than to see my own.

Since I grew up with criticism in my household, I was critical of myself and others. It wasn't until I was told how negative I was that I began to see how crippling my thoughts and words to myself were. It took an outsider to make me aware of how I was creating my world.

The Magic of Self Love

Our outer world is a magical mirror that reflects our innermost unconscious thoughts back to us. Until we begin to awaken, we don't notice how much damage we create to ourselves with the words and thoughts we think.

How I Work With You

There are several ways I can help you to move beyond anxiety, depression, and unhappiness. Energy work, healing your field and removing the patterns and blocks to love, or hypnotherapy sessions. In my coaching sessions, I use all of my tool boxes, of The Akashic Records, coaching, intuition, healing, energy and hypnotherapy. In two hypnotherapy sessions, I can help you permanently change the way you feel about yourself. Hypnotherapy is a powerful healing modality that reprograms the unconscious mind to think in positive instead of negative ways.

Beliefs

Our beliefs created from early childhood traumatic events govern our adult life unless we change them. Beliefs could be:

  • I am unlovable
  • I am unworthy
  • I am not valuable
  • I am not heard
  • I am not respected
  • I am not worth loving
  • No one will ever love me
  • People will reject me

Begin Today With A Mantra To Heal Your Mind

I am strong, powerful, harmonious, loving and happy!

I am lovable
I am worthy
I am loved
I am safe
I am secure

We can only make ourselves happy. Working on our inner self is the key to being happy with our outer world. I wish you the happiest of holidays whether you celebrate Kwanza, Christmas, Hannuka or Hajj, and so much love!

Work with Jennifer to find the love inside of you so that you can have the relationship of your dreams. Whether you are currently in a relationship or not, Jennifer will help you find the love wherever you are helping you shift your perspective to be happy and fulfilled.
I love you!

Tread Softly This Holiday

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

As I wrap up my time here in Boulder, Colorado in the cold and head for warmer weather in Toronto, Canada a word of caution for this Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. A lovely combination of the slowing of the planet Uranus (which is known for destroying and undoing) coupled with the last full moon of 2015, could increase challenges, difficulties, and communication. Emotions could be stronger than usual and triggered abruptly.

Just a few suggestions to help you navigate those dinner-time conversations when embarrassing questions are asked about your upcoming engagement, pregnancy or promotion. If you are single, like me, there are often questions about when we are going to grow up or get a real job. This is for you! This article is written tongue in cheek, we all need a better sense of humor when spending time with family members and loved ones.

  1. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer pretend you didn't hear and ask for more mashed potatoes.
  2. When asked how many cats or dogs you now have tell the inquiring person you are starting your own non-profit shelter and have a no kill policy.
  3. When your children are critiqued by grandma or grandpa, smile at the octogenarian and tell them that you encourage creativity and individuality, rather than following the crowd. You are raising an individual, a world-changer. World changers are different and bounce to a different beat. Thanks for noticing Grandma! Don't forget to tell her how much you appreciate her wisdom and input.
  4. If someone tells you that you have gained weight, tell them that you just won a hot dog eating contest and haven't taken all your winnings off as yet.
  5. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you can just as easily answer the above question about weight gain that you are trying out a new collagen booster and it may look as if you have gained weight, but it is really just collagen.
  6. If you are slaving in the kitchen and no one is helping, tell your guests that the good news is that they get to eat today! The bad news is that they get to help put dinner together! Get some
    help. Don't do everything yourself.
  7. I have a very dysfunctional family. I smile and nod a lot while eating my food. I don't get triggered by their attempts to put me down for being a "hippie coach," or "whatever you do...."
  8. Eat less and chew more. When we are upset our digestive system doesn't work as well. Anxiety and food don't mix. Breathe and smile. Know that you are only connected by DNA. Love, love, love is what they all need.
  9. As the penguins in the movie, Madagascar say, "Smile and wave boys! Smile and wave!" Know you will be leaving soon and this holiday will be a fond memory before you know it! Tell family members how much you love them, no matter how annoying they might be after several days.
  10. Make your presence the important part of Christmas, rather than the presents the focus. Time spent in conversation with loved ones mean so much to those we don't see often. Enjoy
them while you have them, life is short and we all end up taking a dirt nap at the end of our road, so make the time while you are here happy and enjoyable. Don't get caught up in who did what to whom. You are no longer 8!
December 29, 2014
Wishing you a wonderful and happy Christmas. Tread softly and spread the love. Smile more and breathe deeply. There is plenty of time to sleep at the end of the road! I am off to Toronto to spend Christmas with my 93-year old mother. We just don't know what tomorrow may bring, make the best of today, no matter what.

ALL Alone For The Holidays?

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

What is it about holidays that make everyone want to go home to visit? Once there, we wonder what ever possessed us to spend all that money on airfare or gas to listen to our parents' and siblings tell us all the things that we are doing wrong and how we need to live our lives differently. But that is family. They are the ones that know exactly how to push our buttons and get our goat.

Sadly, many of us will be alone for the holidays. Children may be stateside when you are deployed.  Or your family may be in a foreign country and too far to visit during this time of year. For many of us, the holidays are a time when we experience depression, loneliness and sadness - even when with family. How then can we navigate Thanksgiving, Chanukah, Christmas or Kwanza without our loved ones and still enjoy ourselves?

Making The Best Of The Situation

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday for many reasons. Thanksgiving involves gratitude which I love. It also does not involve gift giving - so there is not a lot of financial stress over Thanksgiving, which is amazing. Thanksgiving involves cooking, eating and watching movies for me. The smell of a roasting turkey with stuffing in the oven, pies, whipped cream.....  it all makes my mouth water. Until I remember that my family is all going to be spread apart this Thanksgiving. However, planning and intent can change a situation that might end up being something really wonderful.

Days Of Holidays Past

I reminisce about Thanksgiving in Canada with my family. As soon as dinner was over the women would go and clear the table, getting coffee and dessert out. My oldest brother would disappear and fall asleep in someone's bed. He often over-eat, like Goldilocks find someone's soft bed to roll onto. He would go into a semi-coma after a big meal. I miss those days. It has been a long time since I enjoyed Thanksgiving in Canada with my family of origin.

A new Hartman Group study reveals that 46% of all adults eat alone. This growing trend shows a move towards a more solitary environment. One good thing about eating alone is that you won't get heartburn about what your mother, brother, sisters or brothers say to you over your meal. A peaceful candelight dinner for one can be enjoyable. Thanksgiving though, is another story.

Traditional Thanksgiving Dinners

Buying a frozen dinner hoping it will substitute for a home-cooked meal will not thrill you. Even dining out alone in a restaurant doesn't sound exhilarating either. Here are some solutions for McDonalds, Jack In The Box and Taco Bell, Thanksgiving meals.

  1. Find a local church that is doing a community dinner and join them.
  2. Volunteer at a homeless shelter and bring a cooked turkey to add to the feast. This way, your home still smells like turkey and you will be contributing towards feeding the hungry. So it is a win-win for both sides.
  3. Ask around in advance where your assistance could be needed at a church shelter or senior center. Warm bodies are always appreciated to serve with a smile. Helping out serves two purposes, you recognize what you have and you appreciate your life so much more. Giving back always makes you feel good!
  4. Plan in advance so that you are not spending the whole day alone. Find a group to play games with or go for a walk with later in the day.
  5. Take a spa vacation for two days. Pamper yourself by staying at a Hyatt or other plush hotel and treat yourself royally.
  6. Play Christmas music that makes you feel good.
  7. Write Christmas cards and Thanksgiving cards and send them early to the ones you love. This old fashioned tradition is a lost art and will make you think of each person you won't see with a fondness. Put your heart into your message. Don't just sign your name.
  8. Call those you miss and tell them you love them.
  9. Watch movies that make you feel good. The happier the better. Laughter is good for the soul. Which is why I always watch National Lampoon Christmas Vacation every year, more than once.
  10. Avoid drinking as it is a depressant.
  11. Buy some scented candles to make your home or apartment smell festive.
  12. Do things that you love and make you feel good. Treat yourself to special foods that you wouldn't normally cook. Like roasting a duck, or brussel sprouts.... something you really like.
Suggested Mirth in Movies

There are some really great holiday movies out that I recommend. Some are better than others and the ones I love best make me laugh and feel warm inside. These are the type I recommend for you.

  1. National Lampoon Christmas Vacation - my family's favorite stupid Christmas movie. We watch it every year. It is a classic. A lot of laughs and Chevy Chase at his creative best.
  2. Home For The Holidays. (1995) With Holly Hunter, Dylan McDermott, Anne Bancroft (full movie below)
  3. The Holiday. With Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black. Even if you don't like Jack Black, this movie has many redeeming qualities, like the fact that it is set in the most beautiful part of England and LA. Yes, it involves love. A chick flick, but funny and sweet at the same time.
  4. Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Steve Martin and Beloved Canadian actor, John Candy. This movie is hilarious and heart warming.
  5. Scrooge. Bill Murray.
  6. The Santa Clause. Tim Allen. Although this could be construed as a kids movie, it is a happy, feel good movie. The kind you want to watch when you are all alone.
  7. Dutch. Ed O'Neill. Thanksgiving movie. Ok. You might want to kill the kid at some point in the movie, but it gets better.
  8. The Family Man. Nicolas Cage, Tea Leoni. Wealthy Wall Street trader, living the high life. His life is changed totally over night when he wakes up in suburbia married to his old girlfriend - with children. Great lessons, love over money. Happiness over the material. Funny, heartwarming.
  9. Holiday Inn. Bing Crosby. Yes, it's old, but it's a feel good real Christmas movie.
  10. How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Jim Carrey.
  11. Elf. Yes, it stars Will Ferrell, but wonderful warm and heart opening ending. Ed Asner plays Santa - well.
  12. A Charlie Brown Christmas. Sweet and a tradition.
  13. Home Alone. I couldn't leave this one off.
