10 Powerful Ways To Fill The Emptiness Within

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters

Author's Note: I pulled this article out of the archives from December 2013. It is still pertinent and powerful today.

Feeling lost, unfulfilled and empty?

Half of my life I felt broken, lost, depressed and empty. I began my quest at the age of 16. I was looking for the answer to the age-old question, "Is that all there is?" I knew that there had to be more to life than the rat race of school, work, family, and death.

I searched for answers. I studied different religions, attending workshop after workshop. I longed for this void to be filled. It did not matter if I fell in love, had a relationship or did not, the empty place could not be filled. I searched for years, through one relationship after another. I became the ultimate consumer, shopping for clothes, cell phones, houses, and furniture. None of these things filled the void.

I got married, had children, thinking that that was the answer to what was missing. I felt better, but still not complete.

Not until I began to heal my own life, did I find what was missing. As I became certified in hypnotherapy, energy healing, life coaching and began to read The Akashic Records. I started a healing practice. In helping those in need I found fulfillment.

Through healing myself of unworthiness and self-hatred, I found that I had a knack for helping people to bring up their own issues, naturally. Just sitting in a room with someone, they would begin to cry and talk to me about their most intimate and profound issues. Even men who never spoke about their wives who left them, or their deep sadness, would begin to open up and spill their guts to me. My search for love led me to help others to heal their lives. I was able to help others change their lives by being the catalyst in theirs. It was here that I found the secret component to life and fulfillment.

What I found was that I could help people in simple ways or profoundly helping women and men change and heal their lives.  Anytime I helped another I was filled up. My passion for helping others is what carries me through my days. I awake with the names of people I don't even know in my consciousness and pray for them for whatever it is that they need at that time. Every time I open a door for another, offer a generous gratuity in a restaurant I am  filled up. The simplest of gestures can change someone's life. When you begin to notice the pain others are going through, it makes you realize how wonderful yours is.

I also found having a deep and profound Spiritual connection (no religion required) brought me a deep and profound joy. Meditating and teaching others how to quiet their minds has helped so many come to a place of peace in theirs. I had such a difficult time meditating at the beginning. It was not until I learned a few techniques that were simple yet profound that I was able to sit in silence and allow the peace and love wash over me that I recognized that this is available to everyone. We just have to be open to receive it.

A quiet mind creates harmony in one's life. From chaos and suffering to living in joy in each breath is what our lives are all about. Here are some of my secrets to living a life of joy, peace and bliss in the moment.

  1. Breathe. Most people breathe shallowly because they feel unworthy. Breathing deeply shows that you are worthy. Breathe deeply. Exhale completely. Stop several times a day and place your feet flat on the ground. Uncross your arms and legs and just breathe. You will find this brings you into the present moment.
  2. Stop the mind chatter. There are several ways to do this. Here are two: Sit, breathe, relax. Breathe and relax some more. Drop your shoulders and smile to your heart. Turn your eyes upward towards the ceiling without moving your head. Continue looking at the ceiling for 5 minutes or more. Each time you do this you will find the mind quiets. The second way is to envision a laser beam going through the back of your head exiting through your forehead at your hair line. This will also quiet the mind.
  3. Meditate daily. Beginning with quiet meditation without prayer is the way we open up to hear what God has to say to us. Our minds are so active, we need to become quiet and peaceful so that God and The Universe can speak to us. Beginning each day with upright chair meditation will calm you, bringing order into your day, life and world. Harmony within, harmony without.
  4. Be grateful. Each day I wake up and immediately pray a prayer of gratitude for being alive another day. I always say "Thank you for my vibrant health." I believe that this is how I have become so strong and healthy when many at my age have aches and pains. I have none. When we are grateful for what we have, we will receive more to be grateful for. Without gratitude for all you have, you will find more lack and things to be ungrateful for.
  5. Love everyone. We are all connected whether you believe it or not. When you are angry with another, vengeful or harmful in any way, you are hurting yourself.
  6. Forgive everyone. No matter what they have done to you, there is no point in hanging onto anger, resentment and rage. All these negative emotions will do is cause you illness, disease, and more suffering. Eventually, you will say thank you to your perpetrators for teaching you the lessons that you needed to learn. Then you are on the path of healing and wholeness.
  7. Experience nature. Being outside in beauty and appreciating it will help you to feel better, happier and connected with the earth, and the heavens. Nature teaches us acceptance for what is. Nature is in constant change. We need to accept that things will always be changing and resisting change only causes more suffering.
  8. Love yourself. This actually should be number ONE! I have heard Buddhists criticize me for this saying that loving oneself leads to selfishness and loneliness. I have to disagree. Since I have begun to love myself I have been more connected to God and others. I no longer feel like a victim and have taken responsibility for myself and my life. I never feel lonely or alone. Self love is the key to understanding others and being compassionate for you and others. Self-love is the key to healing all relationships.
  9. Accept others as they are. Trying to change another is folly and egocentric. Everyone is on their own path. Everyone is finding their own way. If they ask you for help, that is another story. Giving advice when it is not asked for is like my spiritual teacher used to say, "Throwing pearls before the swine." They will find their way in their own time. Who are we to judge what is right for another?
  10. Be generous with your service, gifts and love. The more generous you are, the more others will be generous with you. We give without expectation, however, the laws of The Universe are designed that the more you give, the more you receive. It is a natural law of The Universe.

The Key To Lasting Happiness

Interested in hearing who Jennifer is on the air? Join her this Friday at 1:00 PM EST and 10:00 AM PST as Hollis Chapman, author of the book Pursue Your Passion interviews Jennifer about her forthcoming book: Orgasm For Life.

This is Jennifer's second time on Hollis' show. Our last time was synergistic, laugh-filled and very entertaining. Find out what makes Jennifer tick, and more about her book.

Now more than any other period in history, people are struggling with their sense of identity. We think we are mothers, wives, husbands, and fathers. We believe we are lawyers, doctors, teachers, and farmers. Yet our role as a parent _fill in the blank is not who we are. Our profession whether it is a medical professional or a teacher is not who we are. We mistakenly identify with our profession. What happens when our professional role ends? What happens to us when this part of us dissolves, through layoffs, termination or retirement? What then?

When we are born we have no such identity. We come into the world as an infant with a fully formed soul intact. Our soul is not one of an infant - our soul does not see ourselves as a baby. Most people have not ever considered the fact that our souls live on after leaving our bodies. They have never considered what happens when we are reintroduced into a new body. The soul in your infant child was a fully formed being.

Each and every soul on this planet has a purpose. Every person we come into contact with is influenced in some way by our presence. It does not matter whether we choose to be a parent or not, we still have the power to influence others. How we choose to be in the world is up to us.

Feeling Lost?

Many of my clients come to me because they have looked for happiness in work or relationships. Although they may be happy and fulfilled by these things for a short while, the happiness is fleeting. It does not last a lifetime. Why does this happen?

True Happiness

Happiness cannot be found permanently through work, love or a child. Our happiness must come from within us. If you are filled with self-loathing, condemnation and criticism, you will feel unfulfilled and maybe even depressed. I was chronically depressed for over 20 years. My depression created many other issues. Insomnia, restlessness, and chronic fatigue were among some of my issues. I also battled constant bladder, sinus. and chest infections. All of my self-criticism and self-loathing made me ill, it made me feel ugly. I recognized that there is an emotional component to all illness. When we are stuck and unable to cry, or release anger these emotions are lodged in our cells, causing bladder infections, bronchitis, sinus infections, pneumonia, and even cancer.

Moving Into Love

When we stop looking at ourselves with a magnifying glass, amplifying our faults and then beating ourselves up with a baseball bat we can begin to accept ourselves. Society teaches us to be perfect. Yet there is no such thing as a perfect individual.

We all make mistakes. We can all be misguided. Our emotions, self-doubt, and fear get in the way of choosing the best direction for ourselves. We often choose partners that end up betraying us, hurting us or leaving. When we recognize that we are okay as we are, and begin to love ourselves unconditionally, our body relaxes, our fear falls away. We don't have to change, only our perception of ourselves has to.

Changing Thoughts

The greatest change anyone can make for themselves is to change their thoughts.

Self-deprecating comments have no place in your head. JEM (Yes that is my motto.)

I usually have great success when I tell my clients, "If God would not say these things to you, why do you?" When you begin to discipline your mind to think only positive thoughts about yourself, you begin to feel more positive. You accept yourself even is you don't choose wisely. You begin to use the events in your life as teachable moments. Learning from the events, rather than beating yourself up.

You Are Not Your Thoughts!

It is possible to change your thoughts. There was probably no person on this planet that was more negative than I was. I was raised in an environment where criticism was rampant. It was all I knew. I became what my parent taught. I condemned myself and judged everyone else. There was a turning point where a boyfriend hit me between the eyes telling me how judgmental and critical of others I was. I began to listen to the voices in my head. Someone else had to tell me, I could not see this for myself.

It took effort, but I began to stop those thoughts that didn't support me. I had begun to believe all the negative voices in my head saying I wasn't good enough, I wasn't smart enough and I wasn't deserving. It took effort, but this was the start of something really wonderful.

As I began to think more positive things about myself, I began to feel better. My illness that was so prevalent went away! I stopped having sinus infections, bladder infections and bronchitis. Even breast cancer was healed with loving thoughts about myself and my mother within months.

Who Are YOU?

When you look at yourself now, who do you see? Do you see the beautiful radiant light that is within you? Do you see the wise woman, or man that guides others with your truth? Do you see the beauty and grace that pervades your life? Do you see the unlimited opportunities for joy and happiness when you stop beating yourself up for not being perfect?

You are not your thoughts. You are not your job. You are not just a sister, brother, technical writer or doctor. You are so much more than that. You are the light that permeates all that you do. You have a purpose, people to lift up with your light, children to guide, lives to change.
Adam, Ariel, David in Boulder, Colorado

When I was in my thirties, I thought I was just a mother. Looking back at my adult children now, I see three beautiful adults serving humanity in their own way. I used to feel small, as a stay-at-home mother. I felt unintelligent and uneducated in comparison to my husband who was so smart. Now, I no longer compare myself with others. I am my own light. There is no one else like me. There is no one else like you. There is no one else who has your gifts, talents or wisdom. There is no other person on this planet that has your exact soul purpose. You are the source of your happiness. No one else can give it to you.

If you are still not feeling it. Isn't it time you set up a discovery session with me to find your inner light. To begin to love every part of your soul, body and who you truly are? If you are not finding the joy and happiness where you are - contact me right now! Your life will change in beautiful ways.

Living Authentically

Living Authentically

By Jennifer Elizabeth Masters July 14, 2013
Jennifer Elizabeth Masters, Grand Canyon, AZ 5/24/2013

Life is good. It is real good. It has not always been this way for me. I struggled with issues of guilt, self hatred and shame from early childhood. Even into adulthood I often felt ashamed of myself and I certainly wasn't happy. It did not matter how beautiful someone said I looked, I did not feel beautiful. In fact I felt ugly, dirty, unworthy, unlovable and lost.

I now refer to those days as my old life, it feels so foreign to me now. I so wanted to be loved that I had to be in a relationship to feel whole. I felt like a three-legged table without someone in my life. I felt empty inside, depressed and negative. I needed someone to do what I couldn't do, love me. With each new man I hoped that he was THE ONE, my TRUE LOVE.  I spent unwisely when I was upset. I would use money allocated for rent, or utilities for clothes for myself. It was a compulsion. It seemed to be the only thing that made me feel better, if only for an hour or two. When I got paid the first thing I would do was to go and buy myself something expensive to make myself feel better. I had heard that it was important to feel good and we certainly were in a hedonistic society where making yourself feel better was supported by the media. Newer, bigger better was prevalent in all the commercials and billboards. I was not responsible for myself or my spending.
For Heaven Scapes, with my kids

I maxed out my credit cards and then could not make my payments. My behavior created more issues as I was not being a good steward of my money. I complained about my life because it really did suck! I had no idea that what I was doing was perpetuating more negativity and lack into my life. I had no idea that my money problems were being created by me and the thoughts that I was thinking. I was so shamed filled and negative that it made me physically ill.

Sexual abuse in my childhood created shame, anger and guilt. I had no idea that I had inner rage that was being suppressed. The history of bladder infections from the time I was 21 was a sign of being pissed off, but at that time, I was totally unconscious (not awake and aware) and had no idea that my anger about the molestation created it. I was chronically depressed until I was in my 40s. I suffered from insomnia due to the depression. It was not until I began my healing process and began to heal my inner child and let go of the shame and self loathing that the depression lifted. It was tied to my repressed anger, I did not know was there. I did not know that repressed anger caused depression. Oh my God! When I released the anger I began to sleep better. The depression lifted. It was not a pill that made it go away, it was letting go of the past.

The Path Of A Seeker

As I went to a hypnotherapist or healer for an issue and found out how magically and wonderfully it worked, I would sign up for the course and become certified in it. By the time I was 48 I had taken so many classes, courses and certifications I had the equivalent of a University education. Certainly every bit as costly. It was worth every penny. No amount of therapy or anti-depressants gave me the relief that getting to know who I was and loving myself as I was, did. I began to live in my truth, and followed my heart. I became a healer and certified life coach full time. I was passionate about healing and helping others to love themselves. I saw how it transformed my entire life.

Coming Into Alignment

Flagstaff Mtn. Boulder Colorado Jennifer

It was not a matter of me changing who I was. It was coming into alignment with my true self. Instead of being agreeable all the time, I said, "NO!" I began to take better care of my own needs, getting enough rest and meditating regularly. Instead of being with people who were negative, I steered clear of them, even if they were family. Especially if they were family. Changing patterns of behavior meant for me that I could not spend much time with those that helped me create my co-dependence. I healed my relationships with all of them. I forgave everyone. I knew they would never change. They were not on the path I was on. That was their choice. They expected me to be the same, but I wasn't. I am reminded of the story of the crab who attempted to escape from the cooking pot, as he/she gets to the top of the pot, the others pull the poor sucker back down to be miserable with the rest of them. That is what happens with family who don't change. They want to make you as miserable as they are. You can't let that happen. I love my mother where she is. I know at 91, change ain't gonna happen. She is who she is. I have accepted that. I can't change another. I can only change myself.
Living in the moment Coronado, CA

Changing others is a sign of co-dependency. I have been there multiple times, worn the t-shirt and donated it to Goodwill about 15 years ago. I stopped dating men who need rehabilitating or rehab. It is a pointless waste of my time and energy. I used to make men my projects. It took me out of my own pain and suffering thinking I was helping them. I wasn't. That was my ego making up stories to get me from realizing how I was suffering inside.
My oldest son, Adam Gates and me, Boulder, CO 2013

I used to be afraid of my husband. I was afraid to say what I thought. I was afraid to go against his edicts. I capitulated when he strongly disciplined my sons, against my inner wishes. I caved. I gave in, I had no will of my own.  The fear led me to feel even more guilt-ridden and ashamed. I began to move through fear. Divorcing him gave me freedom, it also helped me realize he was my biggest teacher. Of course he wouldn't respect me, I didn't have respect for myself!

I learned along the way that our relationships are a mirror for ourselves. It is so much easier to blame another for what is going on in our lives than to focus on ourselves. Blame however, removes our responsibility. It takes our power away. When we step out of blame, it is a form of graduation. It raises us up to personal responsibility. When we become responsible for ourselves, we stop making excuses for being late not doing what we commit to. Excuses are dis-empowering. They reduce us in stature. Excuses are another form of blame. Blame is a low vibration as are guilt, shame and fear.

Moving from Boulder, CO to California 2013

Being who I am is easy now. It does not cause me suffering. I don't feel guilty for being me. I can speak my truth. I am able to stand up for my beliefs. I don't cave in when I feel something isn't right for myself or my family. I stand up tall and feel beautiful. I don't make excuses for who I am or what I say. When I make a rule for my daughter, I feel good about it, instead of apologetic or guilty. I used to feel bad when I made unpopular decisions for my family even when it was in every one's best interest. I don't feel guilty for anything anymore. I look 10 years younger than I did 10 years ago. I lost the 20 pounds that had hung on when I didn't feel good about myself, effortlessly. It is funny how everything works better when you love yourself completely.

I began to take what others would call risks. I began to really live in the moment. If I was driving down and road and saw something that looked interesting, I made a bee-line for it. I experienced beauty wherever I was. My daughter might groan at first, then she found herself enjoying the experience of spontaneity as well. Our life had more joy and wonderment living in the moment. Instead of planning everything, life took on an organic movement to it. Vacations became spontaneous. I trusted my inner guidance, and it never ever failed me. Selling my landscape business in 2011, moving from Georgia to Colorado were huge. After 1 year in Boulder, Colorado, and the death of Ariel's father, we needed a change. Listening to inner guidance, we moved to the Mojave desert in California. These decisions were made in the blink of an eye. We were packed and in California within two weeks of deciding. Confidence comes from living authentically. Standing in your truth. Being who you are, and LOVING WHO YOU ARE BEING. Living in the moment instead of the past or the future was part of my healing. Stepping into my BIG SELF, or my High Self became a natural and organic part of this transformation into enlightenment. Living authentically eradicates fear. I used to live in the gray area, of no decision. Wavering on life. It is very painful there. There is no peace when you live in the gray area. Not only do you hurt yourself when you are undecided, but you also hurt others. Living authentically and being true to yourself means that you are compassionate with yourself and others.
My handsome sons, Adam and David Gates
I stopped judging others and focused on myself and what I was experiencing. I began to live instead of exist. I spent time in Spiritual practice every day, without fail. Meditation began my day and gave me a solid foundation for success. Coming into stillness with myself was the calming influence that helped me begin my day from a place of peace and grounding that transcended the chaos that was my former life. I was grateful for everything I had. I learned to do without things I did not need. I only bought what gave me joy. I was much more careful with spending and liked my life clutter free. Nick-knacks and objects no longer were the focus, instead my relationships were always in the forefront of my mind. I only spent time with people I wanted to. I spent a lot of time alone. I regrouped and rebooted when I was alone. I made sure I got enough rest, healthy food and lots of laughter. I stopped watching the news 17 years ago. I had not read the newspaper since the 80's. I only watched comedies and movies that helped me grow. Documentaries and knowledge held the power for me. I was no longer static or stagnating. I was constantly growing and evolving. Learning and growing with each experience. When people criticized me, I listened and thought about what they said. I checked inside to feel if there was merit or truth in their words. I did not get upset with the messenger. I stopped taking things personally and my emotions no longer ruled my world. I stopped looking for THE ONE, at every turn years ago. I was happy with me and could be happy living the rest of my life by myself. I trusted that if it was to be, I would not have to look for it, he would find me.

Happiness and Joy

Happiness and joy was what I breathed. It replaced suffering and depression. Love filled my heart. The more I loved myself, the more love and happiness exuded from me. Instead of meeting a world of angry people, I found life to be joyous and a wonderful expression of me. I still experienced emotions deeply. Instead of repressing emotions I allowed myself to feel them fully and in moments they were gone. I became a magnet for new clients who wanted to work with me, because they could feel my energy. When I did psychic fairs clients told me repeatedly that they picked me because I felt so grounded. The higher I vibrated, the more money flowed in. I became fearless, which aligned me for prosperity. There is recognition that we are spiritual beings experiencing our humanity, rather than the other way around.
